sure shot not so sure,

I bought a Canon Sureshot (I too thought Canon would be a good bet) and unfortunately, waited over a month to use it. After using it 3 or 4 times, the camera went on the blink for no reason. It just stopped working and would flash a mysterious "H". Still under warranty, I took it to a repair shop, which said they fixed the "O" ring on it. Well, after using it a couple of more times, it stopped working again. At this point, I decided there was something defective about the camera and I just wanted my money back. I could not return it to the store I bought it at as it only had a 30 day return policy. So, I sent it directly to Canon with a letter explaining my problem. Canon said that it did not give refunds and wouldn't even send me a replacement. They assured me they would fix the problem for free (as the warranty states) but then they tried to charge me $80 for it (even though it fell well within the 1 year warranty period and I had only used it for 4 or 5 rolls of film). After much hassle, they finally returned it free of charge and told me they had fixed it. Well, it worked for about 5 more rolls of film before it stopped working again, only this time, I was in the middle of a several month trip in South America. I ended up discarding the damn thing and then had to fork over a fortune for a cheap 35 mm in Ecuador. In addition, when the camera did work, it didn't seem to work all that well either. There was too much lag time between trying to take the picture and the camera actually taking the shot and the flash was constantly going off- even in broad day light. So, the camera sucked and Canon's response was even worse, which is why I will never consider buying another one of their products again.

Adequate Cannon reliability,
By A Customer
This review is from: Canon Sure Shot 105 Zoom 35mm Camera (Electronics)
After much homework and shopping around, I selected this camera because of the Cannon reputation and because it was on sale for a good price. It's a nice camera for the price, but two things disappointed me. First, the manual claims the camera has a slow-sync flash setting, but does not explain how to find or use it. The camera itself has no such setting and after examing the manual word by word, I had to call customer service for help. I believe the manual misleads the owner by suggesting the camera has slow-sync flash, when in fact it does not have a true slow-sync (night) setting as I've seen on other cameras, especially APS cameras. The supposed "slow-sync" setting on this camera is actually the timer mode which is very unstable and unreliable as a slow sync flash. Until Cannon developes a better slow-sync for this mid range point and shoot, it will be outsold by other brands that have refined the true slow-sync flash. A disappointment for a trusted brand. I also thought the body could have a better designed grip for holding the camera steadier, much like the earlier, tried and true sure shot models. Other than that, the camera still takes excellent "Cannon quality" photographs.

5 Stars for the money,

I'm very surprised to read the poor reviews of this camera. I've had it for three years, taken it around the world, and given it generally poor treatment. I have never had a single mechanical problem. It is very compact. The flash is not too harsh. The three point focus system does an excellent job of keeping pictures in focus (much better than my comparable Nikon P&S which I never use because the Canon is better, smaller, more reliable, and lighter). I use it to take well composed pictures (not just candid snap shots) which came out beautifully. My only complaint is that you can't specify both a flash function (red eye/force on/force off) and a shutter function (timer/real time--the flash is on auto for these). To get this specificity you have to go the next model up. Overall, I think this is a FANTASTIC camera for the money (optics and zoom are excellent in my opinion), and I would unhesitating recommend it to anyone. Though they cost more, I think the olympus stylus cameras have better controls, though I've read the optics aren't as good (size is the same for comperable zooms).

I am very impressed with this camera,

We have had this camera lying around our office for over a year for taking jobsite photos. When our son was born, I asked my husband to bring it since it had a zoom feature. We took a roll of black and white, and every single shot is perfect. I used it again to take another roll of the baby and some shots of our vacation, and again, every shot is perfect. I am really pleased with this camera- at least with black and white film, it can help you get really good, art-quality photos. I use the zoom for almost every shot and compose my pictures carefully. We have had this camera out on construction jobsites, and it's been bouncing around in carry-on luggage and my diaper bag, and it still works perfectly. I think this is a great camera for the money- I had all but given up on taking photos- they always came out so badly- until I started taking black and white pictures with this camera.

sharp pictures, poor reliability,
By A Customer

I've had this camera for about three years and had a love/hate relationship with it. It's sturdy, fits nicely in the hand, has a good zoom, and takes sharp pictures, sharper than an Olympus Stylus Zoom 80 that I tried. But I had problems with washed-out skies that should have been blue, and a red-eye reduction that never worked at all. Canon fixed the sky problem (free) but didn't fix the red-eye problem, claiming wrongly that it was working. And now the RT (real-time) feature (for photographing my daughter playing sports) doesn't work at all.

Bad Camera,

I purchased this camera and I have had a lot of trouble. In fact, I'm looking to purchase another camera because the Canon is not working. The camera took good pictures, but there were so many mechanical flaws, it was not worth it. This camera was not cheap. Problems I experienced were camera would not take picture right away and the camera would sometimes decide not to work. The lens would not open sometimes and this camera has been a big disapointment.

Flashing H. Serious design flaw,
By A Customer
This review is from: Canon Sure Shot 105 Zoom 35mm Camera (Electronics)
My wife and I had one for about a year, then got the flashing H. The problem could not be fixed. However, my wife decided to purchase the same camera, and again, the flashing H after a year of light to moderate use. I think I'll buy an Olympus now.Canon, get your act together. Consumers, don't waste your money.

It was a good little camera when it worked.,
By A Customer
This review is from: Canon Sure Shot 105 Zoom 35mm Camera (Electronics)
My husband bought this camera for me after seeing a recommendation for it in Consumer Reports. I liked just about everything about the camera: it took great pictures, was easy to use, had a nice zoom, nice small size that fit into my purse, etc. However, I had the camera just over a year when "H" started flashing in the LCD screen, which means there is a problem with the camera. My husband took it twice to a camera repair place, where the guy just basically "fiddled" with it and then it would work for a roll or 2 of film and then start flashing "H" again. I sent and email to Canon about it, and never heard back from them. My husband sent an email to a camera repair place on the web that sends repair estimates by email and they estimated over $100 to repair it. So I bought a Pentax IQ 105 that I found on sale for $100, since I had a Pentax for a long time before I got the Canon. I think if this camera had worked I would have liked it better than the Pentax, but it's hard to like a camera that doesn't take pictures.

Not worth it!Red eye and an unreliable flash,
By A Customer
This review is from: Canon Sure Shot 105 Zoom 35mm Camera (Electronics)
I, too have had problems with this camera. I sure wish I had checked these reviews before using it. I received it as a gift from my husband after I waited and waited to buy a new camera. I was glad he made a decision for me. It took wonderful outdoor pictures of my three active children. The color, zoom and clarity were great. The problem was with the indoor pictures. The flash took a good 10 seconds between shots and I missed many great opportunities because of this. When I called Canon I was told this was normal and that because of the good quality of the pictures the flash took a long time to come back. There was tremendous red-eye, even though the camera brags about red-eye reduction. I had never even had a red eye with my old (10 yr. old) camera and with the Canon 105 I had it in every shot somewhere-even when a background person wasn't looking at the camera! Also, I dropped the camera (not far on a soft surface) and now I see the H all the time. I called around and was told it's not worth fixing.I may stick with disposables for a bit until I can decide...again...
