  • Auto Focusing Modes and Drive Modes - How they differ, how and when to use them to capture sharp images of both still and moving subjects.
  • Exposure Metering Modes - How they differ, how and when to use them for correct exposures in every situation.
  • Histograms, Exposure Compensation, Bracketing, and White Balance - Understanding and using these features for adjusting to the proper exposure in challenging lighting situations.

Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

What Readers are Saying about Doug's Previous Guide, T2i Experience:

"Best Guide to using a T2i - I don't know how I could fully take advantage of all the features the T2i has to offer without this publication! It's well-organized, easy to understand, and succinct enough to keep your attention while still containing a wealth of tips and tricks to get the most out of your camera."
-Nathan K.

"A comprehensive and concise guide for hobbyists who desire to enhance their photography. I highly recommend this to anyone who wants to ease out of auto mode and learn how to take high-quality photos. The instructions and brief explanations are easy to follow and well organized. The guide is a portable class on digital photography!"
-Elizabeth J.

"A Fantastic Book For Beginning T2i Users - This book has exactly the no frills condensed practical advice on camera settings that I was looking for. The author has a gift for separating the wheat from the chaff. I didn't have a clue how to operate a digital camera, let alone know the definition of the technical terms. After reading this book, I now understand all the critical functions of the Canon T2i and how to take advantage of them. This is a book I plan to keep handy for years to come."
-TP

What Readers are Saying about Doug's other dSLR User's Guides:

"This book, together with the manual that came with your camera, is all you need to start discovering all the potential of this camera."
-Max M.

"It's the first guide I've read which has taken me through all the settings in an understandable way. I now feel that I have control over the camera."
-Peter S.

"I would recommend this to anyone who wants to get a quick start to using their camera. Manuals are nice, but this eBook highlights the important information and gives a quick easy to understand explanation of most all of the functions and controls."
-Ray M.

"I found the (camera's) manual good for understanding how to set things up but not much on the why - this book really focuses on the "why." The guide helped me understand why to use specific settings for specific needs. The Custom Settings sections helps to make firm decisions on how to apply settings by understanding the usage of each in addition to knowing how to set them up."
-Benoit A.

"This manual is a clearly written, concise and useful explanation of the rationale for the seemingly infinite and often confusing settings options. Used in conjunction with the (camera's) manual I feel a bit more confident in understanding how to at last proceed in getting better photographs."
-WLS

3.0 out of 5 stars Informative, but the format did not work for me. May 5, 2011
By dr.mom
Format:Kindle Edition
The author states this in the beginning of the book - he will not discuss controls and functions in detail, so you will have to refer back to the owner manual for the specifics. I was kind of hoping for a stand-alone book. If you are okay with having to go back and forth from this book to the manual, then this book might work for you.

The author repeatedly says things like "____ will be discussed in more detail later in the text." I just found that a little distracting and annoying because it happened so often. I felt like it kind of ruined my flow of thought. Again, if you don't mind when someone starts talking about something then says he will get back to that later REPEATEDLY, then this book might work for you.

The author sometimes refers to other sources to explain things. For example, if you want to understand "back button focusing in depth", click on the link he provides (which leads to the canon website). Or if you "don't yet understand the exposure triangle", which is "important to know in order to understand some of the following content", then read a different book (he provides a title). Of course, there is always a disclaimer that an in-depth discussion of the concept "is not within the scope of this guide." So, I guess you shouldn't expect an explanation. If you are okay with having to look somewhere else for more in-depth discussions, then this book might work for you.

There are no illustrations in this book, so if you are a "visual learner", this book may not be fully effective. Perhaps it is unfair to compare this work with something that I have read in the past - Ben Long's book about the Canon Rebel XSi - which was very well-written, organized and illustrated. I just felt this book did not meet my expectations.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome Book April 11, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
Bought this book right after I got the camera. Was the best decision I made. It shows the key points of setting up and taking images with the Canon 3ti. I am a novice when it comes to DSLR's and I still felt this book helped me a ton.
Would highly recommend it to anyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended, well worth the price. February 23, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Due to a problem with the compact camera I was using, I bought the Canon 600D (T3i) less than 2 weeks before my brothers weddding and a trip overseas. I started using the Canon on Auto but was not happy with the results and was feeling sick with worry that I would not know the camera well enough before the wedding. Fortunately I found this user guide and it was certainly worth the small price. The user guide that comes with the camera tells you how to change settings, but it does not tell you why to select a particular setting. This guide clearly explains what each setting does and recommends different settings for particular situations. It is very easy to read and understand.
I worked my way through this guide and selected all the camera settings and determined which mode would be best to shoot in. After reading through the guide and following the advice I felt much more confident and the photos of the wedding turned out really well.
I was surprised to receive an email from Doug with an updated version of the guide!
I highly recommend purchasing this guide and have already recommended it to friends who own the same camera. At such a reasonable price I am not tempted to pass around copies but would rather my friends support the author.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Must-Have Accessory June 29, 2011
By Steven
Format:Kindle Edition
I bought the new T3i body, the 18-200mm lens, an extra battery, and this book. What a great addition to my bag. This is a well written, full body of work that explains, in plain English, how to get the most out my new camera. Canon gives you a head start to great photographs with the camera and lens. Doug provides the knowledge and experience to bring you to the next level.

Get this book. It will be dog-eared, used, and abused in no time because you will turn to it as a great reference.

And I just started! I look forward to learning more every time I open the book.

Thank you Doug. Thank you for the book and answering my extra questions via email, quickly and competently.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for those who are simple minded like me May 17, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
First, I really liked the simplicity of the book. It really made using the Canon Rebel T3i very simple. Too many manuals out there go way too deep into stuff you really don't need to know. I also liked the fact that it is in pdf format, which means I can keep it on my Iphone 4 or my ipad 2 while I'm out in the field. Plan on using the manual whenever possible. The price is right, the product is sound and most of all, the information is useful. Great job!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very good book for beyond the basics March 30, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
I am an experience photographer who started with a Canon film system back in the 70's and 80's. I switched to digital photograghy early and have gradually advance my non-DSLR cameras. This Christmas, I decided to go with the Canon T3i and am amazed with it. However, I was overwhelmed by all of the buttom, menu screens and other features. I purchased a couple of books including this one. I use the other book to learn the basics and this book to learn details to hone my skills beyond the basics. In fact, Mr. Kostermann states up front that this is not a basic how-to book. There are many links throught the book that lead to great information and tested accessories for the camera right on Amazon.com (I have the Kindle verson on my iPad). There are also blogs with all of the photographs in the book. In my vision of online books this one really is a great example...bringing the power of the web and Amazon.com's extensive collection of photography gear. I appreciate all of the thought and effort put into this book and it seems that many others do to. Thank you for helping with my transition to the Canon T3i.
