Easier to Clean and Replace Than Your Front Element,

I never take my UV filter off of my lens unless I am going to immediately put on a different filter. There are basically two camps out there, those that feel you should always use a UV filter to protect your lens from dirt and scratches and those that feel it is a waste of time and only degrades your image. Well, I tried going without one for awhile and then dirt started to build up on the front element of my very expense lens. And although you can clean the front element of a lens, I feel much, much safer wiping my comparatively cheap UV filter time and time again rather than chancing any actual lens damage. I think for the nearly unquantifiable loss in image quality you may suffer by having a UV filter on, it is well worth the extra piece of mind it gives me.

I am using this to protect my EF 50mm f1.8. No complaints. Good price. Fits well. No noticeable effect on image quality, but added peace of mind.

I purchased this filter to go with my Canon EF-S 60mm Macro lens. I'm very happy with my purchase. I know that some UV filters have been known to negatively affect photos (increasing vignetting, mostly), but I have not experienced that with this filter. It wasn't the cheapest choice, but it certainly wasn't the most expensive, either, and it seems to do its job well. Definitely worth the $11 I paid to protect my much more valuable lens!

When I ordered this item, i thought i would get the best filter for my Canon EF-S60mm f2.8 Macro USM. A great lens deserves a great filter.
When I received the package from Amazon, I looked at the filter and saw the Canon logo. I thought, "Wow! this is the first time ever in my life with my 20+ years doing photography as a hobby did I own an original Canon filter. I took out my pride and joy and took a good look at it. Within minutes, however, the first thing I noticed are the reflections off its surface. It was clean, no fingerprints or smudges, but there are significant light reflections that could add flare to your photograph. A good quality filter should have good coating to prevent flare. The reflections off this "Canon" filter are just about the same as other cheap unknown brands out there. Hence, the quality is also just about that! If anybody wants a good quality filter, I would recommend the Hoya HMC UV filters instead. Costs a bit more but certainly better quality. Of course, If to protect your front lens element from dust, fingerprints, and scratches is only your concern, and you also want to show off to friends that you've got original Canon glass for a filter, then I have no comments. I rate this product 3 stars, instead of 2, since it is not that expensive anyway. I rate this product 3 stars, instead of 5, since I think it doesn't live up to the quality standard I thought of Canon.

I bought this 52mm UV filter for my brother's Nikon D50. He uses it on his Nikkor 18-55 lens. It does a wonderful job of protecting his lens. The picture taken with the UV filter have been great so far.
Also we did not observed any flaring or refraction artifcat as found in the lower end Tiffen UV filters (see amazon). 4 stars because I thought the price was on the higher side/ I was expecting something like this to be 10$.

It's great for protecting the front of your lens, but without any coatings it does tend to reflect some light.

I have used this filter for literally 5 years straight. Still solid and works well. I would have expected the glass to separate from the metal ring, but it has stayed put just like the day I bought it. Solid investment in the protection of your lenses and camera.

This fileter does nothing special UNTIL you drop your camera lens. Then it suddenly becomes very cheap insurance.
I suppose it also is good for keeping smudges off your lens.

I bought this primarily to protect the glass on my lense. I have not done a comparison of shooting in the same situation with and without it.
I can happily say that it does a great job of protecting my lense, has a quality feel to it and does not distort my pictures. I would buy again!

Rating of What?,

Ok, there's not much really to rate here. I think that some UV/clear glass filters might be bad (obvious distortion, easily scratched etc.)- but most of them offer nothing much more than some cheap glass to protect your expensive glass.
(Nothing appreciable anyway - I cannot discern their different UV blocking properties.) |
