4.0 out of 5 stars Easier to Clean and Replace Than Your Front Element
I never take my UV filter off of my lens unless I am going to immediately put on a different filter. There are basically two camps out there, those that feel you should always use a UV filter to protect your lens from dirt and scratches and those that feel it is a waste of time and only degrades your image. Well, I tried going without one for awhile and then dirt...

2.0 out of 5 stars you get what you pay for
This filter is cheap and works well in well lit outdoor settings. However, when you move indoors without flash, strong light sources (such as a candle or window) cause internal reflections in the photo.

I never take my UV filter off of my lens unless I am going to immediately put on a different filter. There are basically two camps out there, those that feel you should always use a UV filter to protect your lens from dirt and scratches and those that feel it is a waste of time and only degrades your image. Well, I tried going without one for awhile and then dirt started to build up on the front element of my very expense lens. And although you can clean the front element of a lens, I feel much, much safer wiping my comparatively cheap UV filter time and time again rather than chancing any actual lens damage. I think for the nearly unquantifiable loss in image quality you may suffer by having a UV filter on, it is well worth the extra piece of mind it gives me.

4.0 out of 5 stars It does what I want it to..., October 13, 2005
By
I got this filter free with my Canon camera bag, and the filter does what I want it to. I haven't noticed any great reduction of UV haze or whatnot, but the real reason you want one of these is to protect your lens on your camera. It screws right into your lens, and the camera lens cover still snaps into the lens filter, so you actually double your protection.

The first time I got some rain drops, dust, dirt, sand on my lens filter, I was really happy that I had one. I can easily just clean the filter haphazardly using my t-shirt, or whatever I have handy, and not worry about it. If I had to actually clean the lens, I would have to be a lot more careful. But if I scratch/haze/ruin the filter, I can just throw it away, and get a new one, for less than $20, whereas a new lens would be hundreds more.

The quality of the filter is perfect, it does not make my pictures fuzzy or any less clear, inside or outside.

A smart and cheap investment for your camera lens.

I took a few identical photos with and without this filter, and saw no difference in sharpness nor contrast. So, if you're looking to save damage to your lense, this is the way to go. I like being able to clean this filter quickly. Otherwize I would spend 10-20 minutes cleaning the lense being so very carefull not to scratch it. Also, it can minimize UV haze... but I havn't compared with/without for that type of situation. (PLEASE COMMENT IF YOU HAVE A DIFFERENT OPINION ... (BRAND))

1.0 out of 5 stars Not Recommended, November 17, 2009

I do not recommend this filter. I used it on my efs 18-55 kit lens for protection. However, I found that it increases flare and lowered the sharpness of my images. My kit lens is now filter-less and taking nicer photos.

I use a Hoya Super HMC 58mm UV filter on my EF 70-300IS lens and have experienced none of these issues. It only cost about $25.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Top Product Recommended by Pro's! May 2008, May 1, 2008

Thru the years, I have used UV filters on all of my photo equipment, including my newest Digital Canon, (READ my Review) for the following reasons, which may help you in several ways:

The Canon UV-1 58mm Haze filter -

* A 'Physical Protection barrier' for the front element of the lens. (Probably the Most
Important Reason), and here's Why:

* Protecting the Front Lens unique "Chromatic Coating". This 'coating' is what separates all
lenses, if the Glass is all equal, even within the same manufacturer, into categories from a
Good lens, all the way to a Superior one. Example - Minolta's Celtic vs Rokkor lenses

* Protection from dirt, dust, abrasions, and moisture. (The front lens is where all light &
images come thorough, that's recorded on film or microchip, so any Lens scratches,
abrasions, or smudges, all get recorded too). This ALSO keeps you from Damaging the
Chromatic Lens Coating!

* Easy Screw-in type, Easy to Change & Easy to Clean. That's 3 Easy's, People!

* Produce a very subtle 'Warming Effect', useful to counter the "Cooler" SHIFT and/or Colors
you sometimes get with some 'Lenses' or in bright sun or in shade. Example: Panasonic &
Pentex and some others have produced lenses with a 'Cool-Shift' lens coating and/or
microprocessor. - What this also means is that your Images will have to be 'Hue Corrected'.

* Very affordable with Excellent Benefit's. I usually buy in Pairs, so that I might have a spare,
just in case, and all pro photographers, bank on it. Just part of the 'must-have add-on's'.

5.0 out of 5 stars I'm not disappointed, August 24, 2006

I mainly bought this to go on the end of the lens adapter for the S2 IS. It does well to protect the lens, but you can't put a lens cap over it. It ends up being easier to use without the lens cap...and quicker when taking pictures.

The pictures are very good through it.

Ordered one in March and its came in fine (not used or abused like others have mentioned).
Amazon.com was the retailer.

I use it mostly for the lens protection aspect and it works great, in fact I'm ordering another right now.

Works well on a normal camera

Tried it with adapter on S3 IS and adapter does not fit robustly.

Get it. Cheap reliable protection for S5 lens. Use with lens adapter and 58 mm lens cap. No problems so far with picture quality.
