I have not been able to get this device to connect wirelessly. Connected with an ethernet cable it works as advertised. Just not worth the money.

Canon WFT-E3A Wireless File Transmitter for EOS-40D

This vertical grip for the Canon 40D makes taking vertical pictures like portraits quite comfortable. The grip has the AF-ON, AE Lock and AF Point buttons as well as the Shutter button. I have connected it wirelessly to my home Linksys network. Connecting wirelessly requires that you understand basic wireless network terms and that you install software that can be downloaded for free from Canon's website, but is not too difficult. Now I am able to use the the EOS utility program to download image files to my laptop computer for example when taking portraits while I am continuing to take pictures. This allows me to see on the computer screen if I am getting the shots or do I need to adjust the lighting. The images become visible on the EOS Utility Screen in just a couple of seconds. The actual download of a RAW file to your hard drive and opening of it automatically in Canon's Digital Photo Professional Program takes about 40 seconds and your camera is busy during this time. You can of course download images using a USB cable connected directly to the 40D camera and the download speed is faster with the wired connection. This grip is what I expected and I am happy with it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant Product, December 13, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Canon WFT-E3A Wireless File Transmitter for EOS-40D & 50D (Electronics)
This product is excellent for photo transmitting. The only challenge I had was creating and configuring FTP servers. You have to have a very good knowledge of setting up networks to get the WFT to work. I got an IT specialist as I failed time and time again to get it right. The product works brilliantly for sending pictures to your pc. the pictures are transferred in about 3 seconds. The price for this product is very steep and Canon is not doing much to upgrade the firmwares (The product only uses a,b and g protocols and the newer n protocol is not supported). The product is ergonomically designed and a pleasure to use.

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent item if you know a little about wireless networking, September 9, 2010
This review is from: Canon WFT-E3A Wireless File Transmitter for EOS-40D & 50D (Electronics)
I just got one of these for an event i have coming up. I have already set it up and tested it on my laptop. This item is perfect for anyone shooting event photography and printing on site. It allows you to continue to shoot and not have to stop, waste time taking memory cards out and in. It works as advertised both wireless and wired. The down side is, if you know nothing about wireless networking then you will probably be frustrated by this item as one reviewer here has shown. My suggestion is check out Microsoft's page on AD-HOC networking. If their page is to confusing then check out [...] they have an app called DLSR remote, on their page are instructions on setting up your computer for AD-HOC wireless, the same principals shown there work with setting the wft-e3a up. also you might want to read the pdf file thats included with this product. either way the WFT-e3a will surley pay for itself in time management when shooting events or even in the studio. Excellent product again from canon, along with my 40d

5.0 out of 5 stars It's a Steal at the price it is going for right now, May 22, 2008
This review is from: Canon WFT-E3A Wireless File Transmitter for EOS-40D & 50D (Electronics)
I concur with everything stated by the positive reviewer and right now is a perfect time to snatch these up as they are being blown out at nearly 50% off the regular price. A truly necessary and excellent item to have.
