From the Manufacturer
Easily capture lifes most precious moments with the new ZR-series Canon camcorders. These easy-to-use MiniDV camcorders feature Genuine Canon Optics in an affordable yet ultra-compact and sleek design that will deliver the high level of performance youve come to expect from Canon.
Canon ZR900 Highlights
Genuine Canon 41x Advanced Zoom Now you can capture true widescreen 16:9 video with stunning image quality from any distance -- all the way up to 41x. Canons exclusive Advanced Zoom system combines Genuine Canon Optics with Canons proprietary DIGIC DV Image Processor to let you seamlessly zoom both wide and long, retaining optical quality throughout the zoom range.
Quick Start Instead of powering off your camcorder between shots, simply press the Quick Start function to put the camcorder in stand-by mode. Quick Start considerably reduces the power consumption of the battery and allows the user to return to recording mode in less than a second, so youll never have to miss another special moment.
Widescreen HR recording The ZR900 records true widescreen for picture perfect video. Canons image processing system uses the entire width of the image sensor, capturing a big picture in true 16:9 widescreen so no one and nothing is left unseen. And Canon camcorders take advantage of more pixels to give you amazing quality.
2.7-inch widescreen LCD A widescreen LCD lets you see exactly what your camcorder is recording, and what your TV will display later.
Image stabilizer Shoot rock-steady video -- even when youre at maximum telephoto without a tripod. It is even effective while panning or zooming.
LCD video light Shooting in low light situations has never been easier with Canons new LCD video light. The next time you are using your ZR900 in a dimly lit room, simply flip over the LCD screen to face your subject and activate the video light function. A soft light emanating from your LCD illuminates the area in which you are shooting, allowing you to get high quality video even in less than ideal lighting conditions.
Joystick The joystick makes using the camcorder easier than ever. You can control playback, focusing, exposure, and menu options from one convenient place.
DIGIC DV image processor Video and photos require different image processing. Unlike other manufacturers camcorders which process video and photos the same way, DIGIC DV treats them differently. This results in video and photos with exceptional color and clarity.
Smooth zoom control With this innovative feature, you can always be sure of smooth, steady, professional looking zoom shots. Simply select one of three pre-set zoom speeds. You can also select variable so you can control the speed manually.
Level Shot and Grid Markers It's easy to keep your ZR900 level for more professional-looking video. Simply press the Level Shot Control button, and a horizontal marker appears in your viewfinder. Then line up any horizontal lines in your shot to the marker and you know your camcorder is level. The Grid marker is also very convenient for setting up the special balance in your shots. And since background colors vary, you can select from two line colors to make the lines easily visible.
Built-in lens cover A built-in lens cover gives you the ability to protect your Canon video lens without ever having the inconvenience of a dangling lens cap thats easily lost.
Still image recording Capture stunning photos in 4:3 aspect ratio to an SDHC card.
Microphone/headphone terminal The ZR900 features a microphone terminal for attaching an external microphone. The audio/video terminal doubles as a headphone terminal for monitoring sound while recording.
Advanced Photo Features A variety of features allow you to capture great photos.
- 9 Point AiAF: Bring off-center subjects into sharp focus.
- Histogram display: With just one push of a button, the brightness information of a still image is revealed. This allows you to monitor image quality, so you can make adjustments to improve the next shots.
- Image Effects: Choose from the following effects to add a creative flare to your photos: Vivid, Neutral, Low-Sharpening, and Soft Skin Detail.
- Special Scene Modes: A wide selection of automatic exposure modes makes it easy to capture great video or photos under any condition. Choose from: Portrait, Sports, Night, Snow, Beach, Sunset, Spotlight, or Fireworks.

Go to Menu->Camera Setup->Zoom and you can select between 37x, Advanced 41x, and 2000x digital+optical zoom options.
Go to Menu->Display Setup->Marker and you can select level marker and grid options.
These are not falsely advertised, but the user did not have the opportunity to find out. I wonder if he bought the same camera or thought he did and bought something else.
Regarding the camera, its a solid performer. Zoom is more than enough. Video quality is pretty good although not the best (For something less than 200$ what do you expect? HD?).
The external mic jack is a big plus. It's very light and fits right into my hands. Mini DV allows me to get uncompressed video out of my tape. Manual controls are adequate, although they could have thrown in more controls for spot exposure, more focus controls.
One drawback is the picture is grainy when shooting in low light. Also it could have had still picture mode to a sd card or something.
I paid 185$ for this camera. I certainly am not complaining. It does what its supposed to do and it does it pretty well. I am more than satisfied with what I got for what I paid.
Easy to move video to computer.
User friendly menu.
Zoom is steady until it reaches near maximum.
Small in in-obtrusive.
Easy to carry and set up.
Sound quality is very good.
Over all, excellent buy for the money.
I would highly recommend.

Bought this camcorder as a graduation gift for my 13 year old niece. She already has an iMac and a digital camcorder so this camera fit in perfectly and she is able to take great videos and edit them in iMovie. She loves to make movies with her ZR900 and the the size, features and price is right.
We already have an entire DVD put together of our 4th of July party just two weeks ago.
Sound quality is very good
External Mic Jack
Okay Picture Quality
Adequate battery life
So this camera was my first DV camcorder that I have used. Beforehand, I have just been using a cheap digital camera. Now coming from a cheap digital camera to this was amazing. For me the picture quality seemed HD (although not). Sound was excellent, and I loved having the external mic jack. I have used this camera for countless videos that I have done on YouTube and for just recording family events.
Now to the Dv. This being DV I didn't know what to expect. I have a love-hate relationship with DV overall. I love the process in which you record the media while importing it to your computer, and the ease of use of firewire. I hate that you have to be very careful with DV, or else, your camera may not be working. (Thus the reason why my camera is not working now) See, as long as your careful and don't do anything by accident that will mess up the video heads, then your find. If you mess up the video heads, well...you're out of luck. However, the odds of that happening are slim.
SO now I have went out and brought another Canon camera, this time HD and digital. I love it. The picture quality is far better then this camera, and transferring files are easier, although I still kinda of miss Dv. But I would definitely recommend the Canon zr 900 to anyone looking for a cheaper SD DV camcorder. BTW, THE ZOOM ON THIS THING IS BEYOND BELIEF!!!!
