5.0 out of 5 stars No Frills Printer: Just What I Want
I needed to replace my HP8150 Printer. My Hp hit the skids during the "simple" operation of changing the ink. A tiny piece of plastic broke off and that doomed the printer.

The Canon PIXMA iP 1800 was interesting as the price was low and it was only one of a few printers available that were not either small photo printers or the all-in-one printers. I...

This printer produces decent output for this price range. Real-world Speed is quite good and appropriate for any occasional printing. A bit on the wide side but does not occupy too much desk space. This printer produces decent output for this price range. Real-world Speed is quite good and appropriate for any occasional printing. A bit on the wide side but does not occupy too much desk space. My main complaint however, is that Canon (like most other printer manufacturers for low-end printers) sells the black dye and color ink cartridges at a very steep price. The black cartridge only comes with 11 ml of ink and the color cartrige comes with only 3 ml for cyan, magenta or yellow. So be ready for high costs per printout. At first, I thought this printer would be appropriate for the occasional printout but each (full) cartridge replacement costs ¾ of the printer's initial cost. Therefore, I cannot recommend this printer. Get a higher end model even if you do not expect to print that much as long-term costs will be lower.

I already have a fax machine and a scanner, so I was not going to spend the money for things I did not need.

I needed a printer that could print some picture and also deliver printed text.
I also, was looking for simple operation. The Canon is simple to operate. It does what I need it to do.

2.0 out of 5 stars Took it back..., July 8, 2007
This review is from: Canon Pixma iP1800 Photo Inkjet Printer (1855B002) (Office Product)
I bought this locally at a famous low-price leading retailer on an impulse (I needed a new printer anyway). They had it for about 10% less than Amazon which I thought, thought, was a great deal. Little did I know it was not. The old adage does hold true for this printer, "you get what you pay for."

First off, I know the ink cartridges that come with new printers are just to get you started. I printed off 10 4x6's and the color ink was already showing 1/4 gone. The ink is cheap though but you don't get a whole lot in each cartridge.

Secondly, the pictures, when I printed them were brighter than what I showed on my screen. So much so that they were almost washed out. I tried adjusting the brightness in the printer options but it didn't do anything.

Lastly, maybe I'm just used to my other printer, but not having an output tray is a pain!

The only really cool feature that I found was the software that enable borderless printing. It let you automatically crop your photos to fill the whole paper.

If you want a decent photo printer I might look elsewhere.

5.0 out of 5 stars Canon Prima IP1800, October 11, 2007

This review is from: Canon Pixma iP1800 Photo Inkjet Printer (1855B002) (Office Product)
This printer is one of the best values that I found. The price is within almost anyones budget. But the quality is the same as many of the much more expensive printers. Quite fast and excellent quality for black and white and color photos.
Also, it uses two (2) ink cartridges, one black and white and one color and they are both much cheaper than other printers. One can buy then from Canon for about $20 or less. Thus, if you are like most users who use one more than the other, you can save.
I would recommend this printer to both new and expert users. A great buy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Decent, March 20, 2008
This review is from: Canon Pixma iP1800 Photo Inkjet Printer (1855B002) (Office Product)
This is a pretty good printer for the money - simple to operate and maintain. I agree with other evaulators who say that the ink goes extremely quickly, especially the color cartridge. As for the reviewer who gave this printer 1 star because it does not come with a USB cable, I have never heard of one that did - DUH!

2.0 out of 5 stars Cheap, cheap, cheap - you get what you pay for, February 14, 2009
This review is from: Canon Pixma iP1800 Photo Inkjet Printer (1855B002) (Office Product)
This printer is a mess. Yes, it's inexpensive (mine was free with rebate). But it's your classic loss leader, "razor and blade" model - give the printer (razor) away, stick it to the customer on cartridges (blades). Canon software for this printer is programmed to reject refilled cartridges, even good ones. The printer routinely breaks in some fashion or another. Streaky, substandard printing, even with Canon carts. In short, the hassle factor of owning this printer FAR exceeds the savings you might get. In simple terms, STAY AWAY!

The printed output is not really all that good. But it works for me. Have had it for 6 months or so but only print a couple of pages a month. When the ink goes out I will buy another printer as the ink refill costs are just too much.

I replaced my Canon Pixma 6000D (with six expensive ink jets)with this nice utility printer. The quality of the photos with the iP1800 are high quality enough for family snapshots. And, I like the separate color and black cartridge so I can save on ink by just printing basic documents in "grayscale." My son says the Canon cartridges are cheaper than HP. Big negative: No tray to catch the paper when it prints out. The printer just "spits" out the pages, which makes it almost impossible to keep large documents in the correct page order unless you babysit the printer.

2.0 out of 5 stars Small foot print but very loud, January 21, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Canon Pixma iP1800 Photo Inkjet Printer (1855B002) (Office Product)
Seems to print fine, the PC and printer disconnected a couple of times in the middle of printing, not sure if this will continue. I loaded this on my laptop using XP OS.

The paper feed sounds like a trap door opening, its very loud.

The size is small, this will make a great companion to my laptop for travel.

No page catcher. seems this would be and easy item to include.

I like the fact that all the color ink is in 1 cartridge.

I would not use the unit as my main every day printer, I think you need to spend a little more money and get a better unit.
