After reading over other reviews for this printer, especially ones regarding clicking noise, print quality and high cost of ownership, I decided to purchase this printer anyway and take my chances based on Canon's reputation for quality. I have previously owned HP Color Laser and Brother color laser printers. I'm not going to bore you with the details covered in the other reviews.

I needed a color laser printer that produces high quality images and text.I was pleasantly surprised at how well this printer works straight out of the box. Like other Canon products, this printer is well built and feels more expensive than it looks. The print colors are spot on, and accurately match the colors produced by my Canon ink-jet printer. Sure the ink-jet is better for photographs, but I am still impressed by the Canon LBP7660Cdn color laser printer because of its fast speed, automatic duplexing (dual side printing), accurate colors and high resolution printing. The clicking noises other reviews reference are barely audible. I admit, The Canon replacement toner cartridges do cost almost half as much as the printer. However, the printer has no other parts that require routine service. I'm delighted Canon produced this printer with such a small footprint and high quality canon quality image performance. The price, which I paid about $300 for, IMHO is also a bargain. Could Canon improve on this printer? Pros: High quality, great colors. Cons: expensive replacement toner cartridges.

If I was rating this printer based solely on the function, I would've given it 4 stars, however, a big caveat I am learning is that it appears the cost of ownership on this is going to be very high. I've had the printer for a few months now and I have to say the print quality is pretty good. Sharp, decent color, and no blemishes like my older Brother used to. Speed isn't bad, though it has to take a break every once in a while to do a cleaning. It's a pretty straight forward printer. Does Duplex well, but no real bells and whistles. It makes an odd clicking noise when turning on, that almost sounds like something wrong, but I assume it to be normal. The web interface requires a password to get into Admin mode, and I have yet to find out what that password is. Not in the documentation, and the one Canon gave me so far has proven to be wrong. Fortunately, you can get into User mode without one. My big complaint, right now, however is I already have to replace the Black toner, and OEM's are over $120. As this printer isn't that popular, there's not a lot of choices out there. I haven't printed THAT much with it, so VERY surprised the toner is already telling me it's out. I suspect it's on a counter that trips after a certain amount of pages. I realize this is starter toner, but I don't see an option for High Capacity, so the replacement better last longer than this.

Just checked the counter, and I got 420 pages out of this for the Black Toner. PATHETIC

The gimmick here is that Canon puts the drum in with each toner, so, the consumer is paying for a drum every time they run out of toner. Kinda like the Tricolor Ink gimmick in Ink Jets, where you're paying to replace all 3 colors when just the 1 is out. Nice revenue producer for Canon, a ripoff for you.

I was looking at the Xerox color laser and Xerox ColorQube wax cube printers - and just couldn't justify the consumables expense. Maybe if I was printing newsletters and print jobs as a professional printer taking money, I could justify it, but we are a small computer shop and I needed something to do mailings and ads that looked a little better than inkjet.

This one fix the bill! The starter set went from showing %100 remaining to zero remaining, all at once. I was hoping to get some kind of sliding scale that let me order new toner. Thankfully I picked up the non-oem Hi-Vision set at the same time. I will review that separately (great toners).

I estimate that I got 700 pages of double sided, full color prints. I guess you could say 1400 to 1500 prints. We went through 1 ream of nice color laser paper plus a few hundred extra sheets I had lying around.

Not one single jam or error. The setup was super easy. The printer is pretty light, I guess. Setup was fully automated. The device cleans and calibrates itself. I should have done one these a long time ago. The toner tray slides out and each toner is showing. No drum rotation or mechanical shenanigans. Pull out the toner cartridge. Stick in the new one. Slide tray closed. Done.

The manual flip-down tray for envelopes and manual feed, is pretty weak. Holds maybe 15 pieces of paper, or 8 envelopes.
I wouldn't want to rely on it for manual feeds. The normal Tray 1 holds maybe 200 to 250. It's not a full ream of 500. But it works great, and the paper output can only hold so many, so it works out.

I would recommend this printer for nice color use. The prints look great.

I agree with most of what others have said - the manual is next to useless and the printer is a bit noisy, especially when starting up. The print quality is good - the colors seem true and with photos there is no visible banding as often is the case with the less expensive color lasers. However, the photo quality is not as sharp as it was with the Samsung CLP-415, which is about the same price. But, the Samsung is a piece of junk (see my review - I had to return 2 of them as defective), this Canon appears to be a very well built machine. I can't yet speak about the cost of toner etc - we'll have to see how long the starter cartridges last. There are a number of sources, both on Amazon and elsewhere, for 3rd party toner cartridges at about half the Canon price - I'll most likely give one of them a try when the time comes. Meanwhile, I'm satisfied with this Canon, though not ecstatically happy. But is there a better choice in this price range???? I don't think so.

Just a follow-up - Jan 3 2014. Still using the starter cartridges - indicators show still have plenty of toner in them, so I'm impressed with that. Printer holding up well so far.
