4.0 out of 5 stars If the scanner was only network ready..., March 29, 2006

This review is from: Canon imageClass MF5770 Network Laser Multifunction (Office Product)
I purchased this machine about a year ago for our office. It was a little cumbersome to install and I sometimes get an error in printing which requires me to unplug and replug in the USB cable but in all, we have been very happy with this machine. It truly is a "workhorse" in our office. It prints extremely quickly and faxes well. The scanner is not network ready, so in order to scan you must have the machine hooked up through USB to a pc. Not the end of the world but it would be much better if it was network ready for scanning. After my experiences with many MF machines, I would definetely recommend this machine.

2.0 out of 5 stars What a Bummer! No Mac Support..., January 15, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Canon imageClass MF5770 Network Laser Multifunction (Office Product)
Being a frequent Amazon shopper, I've learned to read the reviews before buying anything. Read between the lines too.

So when this printer came up as a Lightning Deal for $175, I put one in my cart and did my research before checking out. What a deal! The toner cartridge alone is about $80, so I'm getting a network/USB printer, fax and scanner for <$100. Could life be any better?

Scanning has no network support. No problem...

USB connection requires Windows. Again, no problem...

Some guy had trouble setting up the unit. What computer hardware doesn't have someone who can't set it up. My job was in IT so unless half the reviewers had trouble it shouldn't be too much of an issue.

So the order gets placed on Monday morning, and when I get home Tuesday afternoon there's the printer. Wow! That was fast.

Unpack it from it's large box and spend about 10 minutes going through the setup. Hook up the USB to my Windows PC and the network connection to my router. Piece of cake. Network assigns an IP address and works fine.

Right up to the point I go to print something from my Mac. No go. So I go back to the description on Amazon and there's no mention of anything other than USB needing Windows. What network printer only works with PCs?

Call Canon. No Macs won't work. No drivers for Mac. Not even over the network? Nope. Any drivers coming out? Nope. The printer has been out for a few years so no plans to support Mac.

So back it goes to Amazon. They pay the return shipping because they don't mention the Windows only network support. And I'll get a full refund. But I'm so disappointed that I got this great deal, and can't use it. And I thought MF stood for Multi Function.

If you're going to buy this unit, make sure that noone will have to print from anything other than a Windows PC, because there's NO MAC SUPPORT!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Positive overall, some gripes, December 18, 2007

This review is from: Canon imageClass MF5770 Network Laser Multifunction (Office Product)
I purchased this device to replace a poorly-designed HP Laserjet 3330 multifunction. Overall, I have been happy with it. And compared to the HP piece of garbage, this is light years better. Printing is fast and clear, scanning with or without the ADF is quick. The fax works fine and the faxing from computer is very basic but handy.

I've owned the printer for 4-6 months. Here's my list of nitpicks about the device:

1. I've been struggling a bit with the scan software settings, since the scanned images turn out a bit faint (scanning black and white documents) and want to adjust the contrast and have it remember that setting, but no success so far.

2. The output tray is a bit small, with a 50 page or so capacity, desipte the 250-sheet input tray. I've come back from printing a large mail merge to find pages strewn all over the floor.

3. The printer jams any time I try to print on card stock. Don't try it.

4. There is some type of page counter that displays a "replace toner" message the printer has decided that it's time for you to replace the toner cartridge. The time that it chooses is fairly arbitrary, and I have found that there is plenty of toner left in the cartridge despite the warning. However, the nagging message won't go away, and what's more, the device will accept incoming faxes but refuses to print them out, even though I can print documents from the computer just fine. It also refuses to send faxes. When my toner cartridge is "low" I end up having to juggle the old cartridge and the new cartridge all the time - I leave the old cartrige in to print, and have to switch to the new one any time I want to send and receive faxes. The engineer who came up with that "feature" deserves a sharp slap on the side of the head. Or was it the marketing department at Canon?

5. When I make a mistake sending a print job, such as accidently printing out all 300 pages of a report instead of just page 12, you have to navigate a series of menus on the printer control panel while all those pages are madly spitting out. Logically, you'd just press the red "stop" button to abort it, but it just beeps at you angrily.

6. When the unit is inactive for a while, it automatically goes into power saving mode. Good for it. But when I come along to perform a scan, I have to take it out of power saving mode and wait a minute for it to warm up before I hit the scan button, or it just beeps at me angrily. I don't care if it takes a minute to warm up, just let me load my documents, press scan, then walk away instead of having to babysit it.

7. You load the pages in the paper tray face down. That means if you have a stack of checks to print, you have to re-sort the checks so the lowest number is face down on the top, rather than the way they come in the box, lowest number face up on the top.

So, as you can see, they're all fairly minor nitpicks. Your mileage may vary. Overall, I think I'd probably buy the device again if I could do it over, but I'd probably have to give it a bit of thought first.
