If the scanner was only network ready...,
By Lab Fan (Chicago, IL USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Canon imageClass MF5770 Network Laser Multifunction (Office Product)
I purchased this machine about a year ago for our office. It was a little cumbersome to install and I sometimes get an error in printing which requires me to unplug and replug in the USB cable but in all, we have been very happy with this machine. It truly is a "workhorse" in our office. It prints extremely quickly and faxes well. The scanner is not network ready, so in order to scan you must have the machine hooked up through USB to a pc. Not the end of the world but it would be much better if it was network ready for scanning. After my experiences with many MF machines, I would definetely recommend this machine.

What a Bummer! No Mac Support...,

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)

Being a frequent Amazon shopper, I've learned to read the reviews before buying anything. Read between the lines too.So when this printer came up as a Lightning Deal for $175, I put one in my cart and did my research before checking out. What a deal! The toner cartridge alone is about $80, so I'm getting a network/USB printer, fax and scanner for <$100. Could life be any better? Scanning has no network support. No problem... USB connection requires Windows. Again, no problem... Some guy had trouble setting up the unit. What computer hardware doesn't have someone who can't set it up. My job was in IT so unless half the reviewers had trouble it shouldn't be too much of an issue. So the order gets placed on Monday morning, and when I get home Tuesday afternoon there's the printer. Wow! That was fast. Unpack it from it's large box and spend about 10 minutes going through the setup. Hook up the USB to my Windows PC and the network connection to my router. Piece of cake. Network assigns an IP address and works fine. Right up to the point I go to print something from my Mac. No go. So I go back to the description on Amazon and there's no mention of anything other than USB needing Windows. What network printer only works with PCs? Call Canon. No Macs won't work. No drivers for Mac. Not even over the network? Nope. Any drivers coming out? Nope. The printer has been out for a few years so no plans to support Mac. So back it goes to Amazon. They pay the return shipping because they don't mention the Windows only network support. And I'll get a full refund. But I'm so disappointed that I got this great deal, and can't use it. And I thought MF stood for Multi Function. If you're going to buy this unit, make sure that noone will have to print from anything other than a Windows PC, because there's NO MAC SUPPORT!!!

Positive overall, some gripes,

I purchased this device to replace a poorly-designed HP Laserjet 3330 multifunction. Overall, I have been happy with it. And compared to the HP piece of garbage, this is light years better. Printing is fast and clear, scanning with or without the ADF is quick. The fax works fine and the faxing from computer is very basic but handy.I've owned the printer for 4-6 months. Here's my list of nitpicks about the device: 1. I've been struggling a bit with the scan software settings, since the scanned images turn out a bit faint (scanning black and white documents) and want to adjust the contrast and have it remember that setting, but no success so far. 2. The output tray is a bit small, with a 50 page or so capacity, desipte the 250-sheet input tray. I've come back from printing a large mail merge to find pages strewn all over the floor. 3. The printer jams any time I try to print on card stock. Don't try it. 4. There is some type of page counter that displays a "replace toner" message the printer has decided that it's time for you to replace the toner cartridge. The time that it chooses is fairly arbitrary, and I have found that there is plenty of toner left in the cartridge despite the warning. However, the nagging message won't go away, and what's more, the device will accept incoming faxes but refuses to print them out, even though I can print documents from the computer just fine. It also refuses to send faxes. When my toner cartridge is "low" I end up having to juggle the old cartridge and the new cartridge all the time - I leave the old cartrige in to print, and have to switch to the new one any time I want to send and receive faxes. The engineer who came up with that "feature" deserves a sharp slap on the side of the head. Or was it the marketing department at Canon? 5. When I make a mistake sending a print job, such as accidently printing out all 300 pages of a report instead of just page 12, you have to navigate a series of menus on the printer control panel while all those pages are madly spitting out. Logically, you'd just press the red "stop" button to abort it, but it just beeps at you angrily. 6. When the unit is inactive for a while, it automatically goes into power saving mode. Good for it. But when I come along to perform a scan, I have to take it out of power saving mode and wait a minute for it to warm up before I hit the scan button, or it just beeps at me angrily. I don't care if it takes a minute to warm up, just let me load my documents, press scan, then walk away instead of having to babysit it. 7. You load the pages in the paper tray face down. That means if you have a stack of checks to print, you have to re-sort the checks so the lowest number is face down on the top, rather than the way they come in the box, lowest number face up on the top. So, as you can see, they're all fairly minor nitpicks. Your mileage may vary. Overall, I think I'd probably buy the device again if I could do it over, but I'd probably have to give it a bit of thought first.

misleading features,

we got this for a small office and were excited to have it on the network for our scanning and faxing needs, not until the package was opened and the users manual was downloaded did we find out that the machine does not support network scanning or faxing. now it is just a copier. that part works as it should, but it'disappointing that the rest does not suit our needs.

I returned the machine immediately when I discovered that the powerful lamp (probably 650 Watts) used to scan documents was going to be on ALL THE TIME, instead of lighting up only when needed (as, for example, with the Brother All-in-One I have been using). The so-called energy-saving switch only doused the tiny console lights. Since it was going to be my fax machine it would have been on 24 hours a day. Even had that not been the case, even if I were just going to use it as a printer during office hours, I would not have kept it. I had already returned an HP unit purchased at a local store for the same reason (with HP at least, you could reduce the factory setting for the time the lamp stayed on, unless reactivated, from 8 hours to 2 hours.) I find it unconscionable that in this time, when there is finally some recognition for the neeed to conserve power and preserve the environment, that these manufacturers should indulge in such energy wasting practices. Shame on them!

Pros:- The setup is fairly straight forward. It took me about an hour to have the printer setup, testing network printing, USB scanning, and copying. - The print speed and quality are very impressive. Cons: - The light stays on constantly per design, even in Energy Saving mode. Howerver, this light doesn't cost you 650 Watts as thought in a previous post. According to the spec, the printer consumes only 14 Watts in Energy Saving mode. - The manual doesn't mention anywhere (or may be I don't see it?) that the Scan function only works when the printer is connected to a computer via USB port. This wasted 15 minutes of the one hour I spent setting up the printer.

Setup Nightmare,
This review is from: Canon imageClass MF5770 Network Laser Multifunction (Office Product)
Though highly reviewed for its attributes, this product comes out of the box with built-in ulcers for the hapless owner. The documentation seems to have been translated from japanese, with clumsy syntax and word usage. The setup CD offers the choice of network or USB, not allowing for the use of both in this device with a USB-only scanner. I was plagued with an alarm bell and flashing LCD error message the first time I turned it on that prevented printing, was not described in the troubleshooting guide, and required tech support to unravel. While I can now print, the setup of scanner and copier have so far frustrated my best efforts. We all by now have purchased and setup enough complicated devices to know that careful engineering makes such ordeals unnecessary. The bottom line: if you are a glutton for punishment go ahead and order one of these, but buy the antacids first.

Has major hardware problems,

I bought this in 2007, 3 years ago. Used it fine until recently. Gave me error message, "Download standby/connected." Lots of people getting this message and usually means the unit is trash. People are going with Brother instead. When it works, it is wonderful. However, $600 is too much to pay in Amazon. I got it for $200 at Staples. But skip this unit and try a Brother. A friend has one and its worked for almost 10 years with no problems.

Unpredictable Error Message,
By Hungry Reader (Western Michigan) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Canon imageClass MF5770 Network Laser Multifunction (Office Product)
I have only had this unit for 1.5 years. Intermittently, there has been a strange error message (Download Connected/Download Standby), which Canon support says indicates a problem inside the printer that needs to be serviced. I have managed to get the problem fixed to date by unplugging and replugging the power cord, but it is unpredictable as to when it will be fixed. Could be minutes, could be hours. It has happened to me again recently, and this might be the final hour of its existence!! The cost of repair will probably be more than I paid for the unit. I have multiple HP units that have lasted years without problems. Back to HP for me!!!

I own an MF5730 version of this printer and couldn't expect more from a printer at this price. That's why I ordered the MF5770 from Amazon. The shipping was quick and the box arrived in good condition. Unfortunately, after investing an hour of time putting it together and loading software, the first print came out "crooked." I tried making a copy and it also came out crooked. I read the manual to troubleshoot with no success. Apparently crooked prints, copies and scans are not part of the adjustable portion of the machine. Oddly enough, the problem might be the toner cartridge and not the printer. On the bright side, what a great opportunity this printer gave to Amazon customer service to replace it. I emailed Amazon on a Sunday afternoon and they emailed a return shipping label (prepaid) for me to return it. By Tuesday, a new unit arrived at my door. Unfortunately, the second unit also printed crooked but not as bad. I reluctantly kept the unit because I was too disgusted to send the second unit back. I mean repacking the box and traveling to UPS for a second time really stinks. Canon customer service is an absolute joke. They read from a script and ask you to send them a crooked copy so they can see what crooked looks like. Give me a break. The image shifts almost 3/8 of an inch to the right from the top of the page to the bottom. Even if they concluded that I had the intelligence to diagnose crooked, they were going to have me transport the unit (at my expense) to the nearest service center to drop it off for repair. Thumbs up to Amazon, Thumbs down to Canon. (all they care about is making a buck on every sale.)
