This review is from: Canova (Hardcover)
The collection of the sculptures by Canova here is possibly the most comprehensive, coupled with terse and concise discussion by Fred Licht, whose division of the categories of the sculptures is as original as illuminating, for he does not follow the chronological order at all. The only complaint one might have here is about the quality of the photos. Possibly because of the technical limitations of the 1980's, one can't help expecting a bit better resolution of the photos, which Finn has done nicely in his later publications, alas but not in this one. If one compares the clarity of the photos between the 1940's by Elena Bassi (in Italian) and this one, one is amazed at the high resolution done by the former. Yet, as an English book on Canova, this should still be considered the best up till now!
