Editorial Reviews

Product Description

From Brazil, CSS is the first South American band Sub Pop has foisted upon the global marketplace. The title is Portuguese for "Tired Of Being Sexy" and the sound is a thick, pulsating thing full of haphazard synths and a come-on of call and response that tears down any attempt at posturing. It's equal parts rock mantra and throwback into something new, transcending boundaries of genre and geography. It goes full speed into dance territory, into the unknown and untouched, to emerge all hot and bothered with wild electro-rock. Quick, tightly-wound, unfastened, and supreme.

Move over bossa nova! There's a new beat coming out of Brazil in the form of Cansei de Ser Sexy (Portuguese for "Tired of Being So Sexy"), and it's raucous. CSS consists of six 20-something São Paulistas who are injecting some international exuberance into the Seattle-based Sub Pop label. The only inkling that the group hails from the Southern Hemisphere is the smattering of Brazilian-tinged Portuguese that peppers the album, along with a barely detectable accent in lead singer Lovefoxxx's delivery. The CSS sound is far from traditional folksy world music; rather, it's a mishmash of '80s new wave, electronica, danceable beats, and cheeky lyrics (which are just a bit naughty). Think Berlin and Blondie, with a dash of Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Muffin Spencer of Brassy. This largely female group (all women except the drummer) will have you running to the dance floor in your slouchy boots and skinny jeans faster than you can say "Let's Make Love and Listen to Death from Above"--the first single from the album. --Renata Sadunas

It is very strong but sexy at the same time.

To start, this group's music is pretty much fun disguised as a album.

Despite positive critical review, it seems sad that this very interesting Brazilian group haven't recieved the attention i'm sure they need.

To start, this group's music is pretty much fun disguised as a album. Totally bizarre, fuzzy, bouncy, warm beats fill the songs with other random sounds of the same nature. But those looking for good pop sound, dont' despair. CSS is one of those few blessed groups who's work can be expermental and random, and yet somehow keep a very charming pop sense.

Honestly, this is fun music for people who take their music seriously. Buy it and find yourself bouncing around to the blippy beats of "Let's Make Love and Listen to Death From Above" or catch yourself mimicing the confident delivery of the line's "I'm offffff daa hooooook..i'm ooffff daa hoooook baby.." It'll happen.

Its hard to find an artist who would exactly compare to them..but I will say that the songs would find themselves at home between songs by groups like Shiny Toy Guns, Ladytron, The Rapture and Peaches.

I just randomly happened across this group on Youtube of all places, and what a find! I haven't had this much fun listening to an album in ages! I almost feel embarrassed for liking this group so much, and I can't stop playing their songs over and over. Its rare for me to write such a positive review, but this infectiously delicious album earned it. My favorite tracks, are "Let's Make Love and Listen to Death From Above," "Alala" and "F**k Off Is Not the Only Thing You Have to Show."

Gimme a C! Gimme an S! Gimme another S! What does that spell? FUN!!! The latest addition to the Sub Pop family comes from Sao Paulo, Brazil! Although the band photo looked like a teenage version of Katrina And The Waves, the only other thing in common with that band is perhaps their stratospheric energy level. CSS are totally gleeful, brightly hued and tingling with electricity. It's like they took all these incredibly familiar pop hooks from the last few decades and made all new songs around them. But here's the giant good thing about it -- they sounds completely earnest. There's not a smidge of hipster irony (well, maybe except for the songs like "Let's Make Love And Listen To Death From Above" and "Meeting Paris Hilton" which is one of the better tunes). Fans of The Go Team will surely take a shine to this group. Positively bustin' at the seams with enthusiasm, they maintain the energy level of a half dozen pep squads throughout the eleven tunes, bubbling over at a breezy tempo. An aside, we were particularly charmed by their pronunciation of "Owff tha hoook". Folks with delicate ears, please note that they do have a bit of a pottymouth... although from their lips it comes across as pretty innocuous. Three cheers for CSS! Psst, in case you were wonderin', the album's title translates from Portuguese to English as "Tired Of Being Sexy". Ooh, such a burden, innit?

CSS are definitely worth a listen too. I purchased this immediately after hearing their first single on Radio 6. They have a refreshing sound of their own, and I love the confidence they have in their sound. They are definitely one of the best bands to emerge this year. Anxiously anticipating their next release.

Cansei de Ser Sexy
Cansei De Ser Sexy, which is Portuguese for "Tired of Being Sexy", is better known as CSS, and is now very well known as the band behind the "music is my boyfriend..." song from the new iPod Touch commercial. Having their song, actually entitled "Music Is My Hot, Hot Sex" and originally released in 2006, featured in the commercial has landed the single at #92 on Billboard's Pop 100 and the album at #19 on Billboard's Top Electronic Albums (as of 11/24/07). There is no doubt that it is a fun, easily danceable song, and worthy of the recognition even before it's cameo with the iPod Touch. The question is, what about the rest of the album? If you are into tongue-in-cheek lyrics and playful beats, you may very well enjoy what CSS has to offer. It reminds me quite a bit of Aqua's 1997 "Barbie Girl", although perhaps not quite as charming with songs like "Art Bitch" and "*uckoff Is Not The Only Thing You Have To Show". However, it all seems to be in a fun-loving spirit, so if you're looking for a couple of dance tracks you can impress your friends with for about another month, download a little CSS!

i listen to all kinds of music and i bought the cd after i saw the "lets make love..." video. they are a unique catchy band with great party beats. i love the singers voice. the lyrics are cool, a couple songs alittle weird, but overall a very good album, and gives pop rock a GOOd name.

I had heard this group's song "Lets make love..." and just loved it. I didn't know if the whole ablum would be just as good or if it was just the only good song they had. I took a chance on this, and I am so glad I did! Such a fun and edgey album. I love it.
