5.0 out of 5 stars I really knitted a pair of socks!
For some reason I am fascinated with knitting socks. This book provided me with the basics of how to knit socks and the techniques used for such an endeavor. The instructions are well-written and easy to follow. For me, this book has been a terrific "how-to" for sock-knitting.

3.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good book, with some problems
I've been wanting to learn to knit socks for quite awhile now, and looked at ALOT of sock instruction books before deciding to buy this one. It has some good things about it, does a good job of explaining methods of knitting socks, particularly with double point needles. HOWEVER, there are 2 problems I've found with it. One, it leaves out some little details that are...

5.0 out of 5 stars The best book for learning to knit socks, December 1, 2008
By
This review is from: I Can't Believe I'm Knitting Socks (Leisure Arts #4083) (Paperback)
I have taught many to knit, and many to knit socks. Most sockknitting books leave a lot to be desired. This one does not. If you want to use double-pointed needles, instructions are in here. If you want to try making socks with a single circular needle, (aka "magic loop") instructions are in here. Several nice designs are here for further sock adventures.
I do recommend that someone wanting to make socks learn to work in the round first, on a hat followed by a pair of mittens.

5.0 out of 5 stars I Did It!, September 27, 2007
A Kid's Review
This review is from: I Can't Believe I'm Knitting Socks (Leisure Arts #4083) (Paperback)
The thought of knitting a sock has always scared me, but finally I decided it was a mountain I had to climb. So I bought this book, sight unseen, & Schurch's Sensational Knitted Socks. Between the two of them, I knitted a sock!! A real sock. Me!! I wish I could say that I bought two books but could have managed with just one of them, but I about wore BOTH of them out going back & forth for clarity. Perhaps I am just dense, but if you are also afraid of trying a sock, it can't hurt to invest in both of them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exceptional Instructions Even for Beginners, February 9, 2009
This review is from: I Can't Believe I'm Knitting Socks (Leisure Arts #4083) (Paperback)
I am relatively new to knitting and tried several patterns and books for knitting socks, before I grabbed this book while exiting a craft store. I knit my first pair of socks quickly with no frustration. This book had very detailed instructions with pictures for every part of the sock. Additionally, as the parts of the socks change and new instructions are introduced, that section of the sock is knitted in a different color for further clarification. Kudo's Kudo's Kudo's to the author and her simplied set of instructions!!! The title truly fits the book as I could not believe I knitted socks! :o)

This really is a cookbook for the sock knitter. There are a variety of patters for different numbers of stitch repeats. Find a pattern you like, figure out what gauge you get with your yarn and needles and look up how many stitches to cast on for your sock size. There are directions for toe-up and cuff-down construction and for heel flap and short row heels. You get the basics for designing your own socks. Very good for anyone who is interested in knitting socks.

After reading all the reviews, I bought this book and I must say, I wasn't disappointed. I can't believe I'm knitting socks!! The patterns are basic and easy to follow for the first time sock knitter.

I'm not a novice knitter but for some reason the idea of knitting socks scared me. With the help of this book and a few YouTube tutorials I was able to knit a nice pair of socks.

3.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good book, with some problems, August 26, 2011
I've been wanting to learn to knit socks for quite awhile now, and looked at ALOT of sock instruction books before deciding to buy this one. It has some good things about it, does a good job of explaining methods of knitting socks, particularly with double point needles. HOWEVER, there are 2 problems I've found with it. One, it leaves out some little details that are helpful for someone learning to knit socks for the first time. In frustration, I ended up buying Ann Budd's Getting Starting Knitting Socks just a few days after I bought this one. I found that it filled in the gaps this book had. Particularly about joining the knitting as you start to knit in the round. But, also, I found some "math errors" in the instructions. I'm sorry, but 13 + 8 does NOT equal 22! That's just part of one of the errors I found in the instructions for a basic sock. I was still able to complete my first sock, and am almost finished with it's mate, but I've been wishing I'd skipped this book and just bought Ann Budd's book from the beginning. If you decide to try this book, just be aware that there are errors in the instructions and you have to compensate for the math errors. Not something that makes starting to knit socks for the first time any easier!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide for first-time sock knitters, May 11, 2009
This review is from: I Can't Believe I'm Knitting Socks (Leisure Arts #4083) (Paperback)
I'm an experienced knitter who has knit numerous scarves and many dishcloths. I took the leap to try and knit socks with this book and was pleasantly surprised at how clear the directions are written and how easy the patterns are to follow. I started from the very first page of instructions and knit up a sock in no time. I have since knit 1 more pair from the book. I highly recommend this book for the experienced knitter who wants to learn to knit socks.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Instructions, February 17, 2009

The instructions are clear and easy to understand, and it explains how to knit with dpn's, the magic loop, and 2 circs. The patterns are nice as well.

Personally, if your are wanting to learn the 2 circ. method, I prefer Antje Gillingham's "Knitting Circles Around Socks." Her instructions for this method are, by far, the best that I've seen.

A nice addition to your knitting library.
