Editorial Reviews

On her third CD, Can't Control Myself, critically acclaimed rising star Gina Sicilia digs deeper into the realms of Soul and Americana music on a killer set that showcases her strikingly distinctive singing and songwriting. Produced by VizzTone label mate Dave Gross, who also played most of the instruments.

This is the young Philadelphia singer/songwriter's third release. Engineered and mixed by Dave Gross, who also plays practically every instrument on the record. It starts out strong and hits ya right in the ears with Addicted, a dark and sensual ode to the joys that are contained within any addiction. She (writes) and sings "I take a puff of my camel, pop and drink up all I got, pull a dollar out my pocket, put a quarter in the slot...then I pull on the lever, find out what I'm gonna win, the only place I'm going is the only place I've been, cause I'm addicted." Damn, this is just great songwriting.

Ms. Sicilia offers us what seems to be a very personal look behind her eyes and into her psyche. Her songwriting has matured to the extent that her singing has. Both are very close to the top of their game, if not already there. Within her songs there is a dark, brooding almost 'film-noir' feeling, the world that these words inhabit is frail but not weak. The strength comes from the beliefs that are held very close to the heart but they always seem to be just on the edge of teetering off kilter. But reclamation comes from resignation in a closely tied knot of emotional bondage.
Ms. Sicilia puts three covers on this release all wonderful choices that seem to be naturals for her. Willie Dixon's Crazy 'Bout You Baby, which had me thinking of Linda Ronstadt and the sound of the seventies with that chunka-chunka guitar intro (where is Waddy Wachtel ?).

A very interesting choice is the Larry Addison song Member's Only made famous by Bobby Bland. I don't know too many artists who would take this on, and even less ladies, but Gina nails it and Dave's syrupy thick slide work is a beautiful accompaniment to her deep soulful voice.

Pigeon holes are for pigeons, not this Philadelphia songstress who hits me as the best American female blues singer since Susan Tedeschi, and has the soulful chops of a young Bonnie Raitt. She's got a voice that is old and bleeds blues beyond her 25 years, she's got an earthy quality that belies a Temple University Journalism degree. She's got a `tease' in that voice that speaks of years on the bawdy roadhouse circuit, except she hasn't been there. She also writes songs that run the gambit from 2 beat country to jazz and all the time reflecting on and paying tribute to song writers that aren't immediately apparent as influence in her performance or her own songs. Stevie Wonder's "A Place In The Sun" sung as a straight ahead, Americana ballad, Willie Dixons "Crazy Bout You", delivered as a mid-tempo blues rocker.

The instrumentation aids in blurring the lines; Hammond B3 organ and accordion, Wurlitzer pianos with baritone and tenor sax, lap steel with toy pianos. As crazy as it sounds, it works and hooks the listeners from the start. It's easy to see why she was nominated for a 2008 Blues Music Award in the category of 'Best New Artist Debut'.

Sicilia recorded her first album, Allow Me to Confess in 2007 and she was hailed by none other than JazzReview as "the best blues singer on the music scene today". This led to a second album, Hey Sugar and extensive touring which culminated with an invite to the Legendary Rhythm and Blues Cruise in 2011.

On Can't Control Myself she seems to explore a more roots sound, while still keeping that link to the blues. Anything you want to call it, she has star quality with a powerful voice that seems to be right at home in a large number of genres. She's also more than capable as a song writer.

I've had this CD for three or four months now. It's still on my regular play list and shows no sign of getting old.

It appears that Gina Sicilia can sing anything and do it extremely well. I was never a big fan of "Place In The Sun" before, but I really like her take on it. There have been a lot of covers of"Members Only", the best probably being by Jimmy Thackery. Her version is at least as good as his, maybe better. However, "Before The Night Is Through" (one of her own) is one of the best songs of recent time. I first heard it on a blues station, but it could comfortably fit in with country or mainstream as well. If The Drifters were still around, they'd probably record it themselves.

Once you've tried this CD, you'll probably go buy her earlier ones as well. After you've heard them, you'll be hoping for more. If you go to her website, she's having a fundraiser until mid-January to come up with enough money to bring out a fourth CD, and you'll probably consider contributing. Good idea.

No, I have no connection with Gina Sicilia, her band or organization. I just think she's that good. I hope you think so too.

Got this after seeing her live act recently. Powerhouse vocals, great songwriting and good covers. Awesome axe work by Dave! You have to catch his solos live!

Talent vocalist, Gina Sicilia, releases another superb Blues/R&B album, "Can't Control Myself." You will find Sicilia has a strong and powerful voice that can light up any song she sings. The collections of songs on this CD are sheer entertaining and will make you want to hear more from this gifted vocalist. The first track, "Addicted," instantly introduces you to a voice that has a polished soulful passion. Taking to a slower groove, the songs, "Members Only" and "As long As You're Here" will trickle gently into your heart and soul as Sicilia sings with compelling Bluesy vocals that is complemented fine instrumentation. The title track, "Can't Control Myself," has a catchy melody and a free flowing style. If you are into musical artists such as Bonnie Raitt or Grace Potter, then you will really enjoy the magnificent Blues/R&B songs on the CD, "Can't Control Myself."
