Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

A young farm girl is disappointed by her napping turtle's reluctance to move. In her morning rounds of the farm, she encourages two fish to swim, three kittens to purr, finally calling on 10 rabbits that hop at her request. How does she get that turtle to move? She mentions lunch, and he amiably pads over to his lettuce leaf. O'Donnell ( Maggie Doesn't Want to Move ) successfully combines a counting story with a genial tour of different animals on the farm. Chambliss's happy-go-lucky pictures show colorful scenes of everyone involved, from munching inchworms to marching ants. Ages 3-5.

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 2-- This delightfully fresh counting book offers a winning combination--a rhythmic text that works as a story, with cheerful illustrations that add humor and charm. The feisty young heroine tries to get her sleeping turtle to move, but despite the fact that she can get two goldfish, three kittens, and on up to ten rabbits to obey her commands, she can't get her turtle to move. Children will enjoy joining her lament: "I can't get my turtle to move," which is repeated after each sequence. They will also be happy to see the turtle finally emerge, thanks to a bribe of lettuce. Chambliss' lighthearted illustrations are the perfect complement to the text. Her lively animals have priceless expressions and even the ants have personality. This can be used as a counting book, but it will also be an entertaining choice for story time. --Lori A. Janick, Parkwood Elementary School, Pasadena, Tex.

5.0 out of 5 stars I Can't Get My Turtle to Move, February 10, 2011
This review is from: I Can't Get My Turtle to Move (Hardcover)
I am memaw (called by my grand-children) I must have read this book a thousand times to my oldest grandson alone I have 4 grand children now and all have heard it many many times.I took my very used large paper back book to my church classroom and read it there several times and one fine day someone (cleaned the room) and to them it looked pretty bad it was tossed out.
My grand son who heard it most will graduate next year and want another especcialy for him.
Now for the review it is FANTASTIC for many learning experiences: reading, letters, numbers, recognition of animals and really so much more. AT my age I was 50 when I first got the book free at that time because of winning a prize of attending a meeting,I was the only person there to get one of these books. Like I said earlier I really wore the book out by me reading it myself and being careful with it.
I loved every bit of it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cute counting book, April 18, 2000
By A Customer
This book tells of a girl who can get her two goldfish, three kittens, four puppies, five butterflies, six inchworms, seven ants, eight hens, nine crows, and ten rabbits to move, but not her one turtle. How will she get her turtle to move? This book has lively illustrations and repetitive text that is great for young kids (ages 2-5.)
