Earth Laughs in Flowers,
This review is from: Can't Go Back (Audio CD)
Of all the three albums by Papercuts, "Can't Go Back" is without a doubt the best. From start to finish, the listener is hooked. The melodies are strong, the lyrics are confessional, the instruments do sound like one beautiful machine behind Jason's voice which like many great singers over the past decade, is drenched in spring or hall reverb giving it a triumphant quality as if he is singing like he is gonna die any day and must get these tunes in his head on wax before he meets his maker. I don't usually like to give an album 5 stars unless it really really deserves it. I'd give "Can't Go Back" if it were at all possible. Buy this album. Oh, and it sounds best cranked up really loud or through some decent ear cupped headphones.

beautiful and soothing. for me there are at least these stand-out tracks: "Dear employee" and "Sandy". I have played those so many times over, especially helpful during emotionally turbulent times, I'll just leave it at that. soothing to the soul. i was not disappointed by the lo-fi quality, that is what i like about it.

Geez, how have I never heard this album before? I caught a snippet of one song scoring a video on Youtube and was instantly intrigued. Bought the album and it hasn't left my CD player (home, car, portable) since. This is some of the most beautiful music I've ever heard, sad and sweet and melancholy. It's all in the melodies. As soon as you hear it, you know.

This is some very underrated & folky indie pop. Catchy melodies and great instrumentation. Classic-sounding songwriting, particularly on "John Brown." That song reminds me of Bob Dylan and Mazzy Star.
This band has toured with Grizzly Bear, the Ladybug Transistor, and Beach House and I would say those are all perfectly fitting partners! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED ALBUM HERE.

Fantastic,

4+ stars. Simple string orchestrations, lots of acoustic guitar, piano & organ but it's the understated electric touches and vocal harmonies that give it a languid, California-esque feel. Such a consistent vibe that it almost feels like a concept album - even with the pleasant changes of pace provided by "John Brown" and "Found Bird" which sound as if they are off of an E. Morricone western soundtrack. Melancholic, smile inducing pop. Standouts = "John Brown", "Sandy", "Outside Looking In" though the album is so thoroughly of a piece overall that you feel guilty singling out any single track. A cd completely successful in creating its own world and making you glad you were able to visit.
