Editorial Reviews

2011 compilation from the East Coast rockers from Queens, New York. The Vagrants are as OG as they come. Admired from across the Forest Hills High School cafeteria by future members of the Ramones, they ripped across the city and state with ecstatic abandon and an explosive stage show. They angered Bill Graham on a mini West Coast tour and were told they'd never play there again. Full of damage and pure dynamics, the Vagrants provided the blueprint for early Punk. They invented their own timeless interpretations of Soul and contemporary Rock smashes including their infectious take on Respect, eventually immortalized on the original Nuggets compilation in 1972. But forget the tales of these real rock Rumble Fish, it's the music that tells the story. This release contains 12 tracks of groovy garage, propulsive Psych, and primitive Proto-Punk. Also available on LP.

It's wonderful that someone has finally put these recordings out on CD. If you never have heard the Vagrants (or have only heard Respect on Lenny Kaye's Nuggets releases), then this is only deserving of 3 stars. It's a great artifact of 1965-68 but there are reasons that none of the other recordings were hits; they just weren't great songs. If you saw the Vagrants perform live and are a fan, it's sad that this isn't a 5 star release. First, unfortunately, it doesn't contain any unreleased Atco recordings (even if they were unfinished) and doesn't contain any live recordings (what we would give for Exodus!?!). Second, and more importantly, it contains an alternative mix of When It's Over! Hopefully, they'll read this and release an MP3 of the single mix.

I agree with the comments from the other reviewers above, especially those who, like me were BIG Vagrants fans back in the day. For a period of a few years in the 60's The Vagrants were my favorite band. I must have seen them live dozens and dozens of times. I still have great memories of seeing them as the headliner at Queens College where they blew The Left Banke off the stage. I also have fond memories of sitting on the floor at Unganos directly in front of the band and saw an amazing show and, of course, all of the great shows at The Action House.I have seen many many bands in concert since those days, but the shows that The Vagrants put on still rank as highlights in my long concert going experiences.
What I wouldn't give for a cd of The Vagrants live show (especially You Don't Have To Say You Love Me and Exodus). I met Peter Sabatino at a new Vagrants show at The Warsaw club a few years ago and had him sign a cd he was selling of the originals Vagrants that did include a live version of Shake and Satisfaction. I informed him how much the band meant to me which he seemded to appreciate.
So happy to have this material on cd- sounding great- after all these years.

I ache for those who never got to see them live. I attended over two dozen shows and can say truthfully that the impact of that experience never left me. How utterly frustrating that this great band never "broke" nationally. They would have wiped the stage with anyone else who showed up. Incredible arrangements of "You Don't Have to Say You Love Me", "No Reply", Leslie West exploring vocally the depths of "This is a Man's World", tour-de-force extended renditions of "Satisfaction" and "Like a Rolling Stone" and a balls-to-the-wall version of "Gimme Some Lovin" with another incredible Leslie West vocal. All of this and more by a band that just ROARED in performance- fronted by Peter Sabatino's incredible showmanship- all this bundled with the originals available in this way too sparse catalog of recorded material. People, this was a singular act and an absolute monster live. I wish you could've been there!

A twelve song CD by a Long Island band that - if the other reviews are any indication - was better live than on disc. In that aspect, I found this record to be quite similar to one by The Remains. But, while the CD by The Remains constituted their recorded audition and singles, the material by The Vagrants seems to a limited collection of what's out there. The reviews mention material recorded by ATCO for a possible album; they talk about songs performed live but not on the disc. In point of fact, the other reviews say less about the CD and more about other things.

I found the recordings on the CD to be very good, but not outstanding. It great music for listening and dancing; it's just what you'd expect from a very good bar band. But, there's nothing here that would make you think they were going to be or could be great.
