Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

In chapter one of the pseudonymous Cash's sidesplitting seventh Domestic Equalizers mystery (after 2010's Our Red Hot Romance Is Leaving Me Blue), the tour bus carrying flame-haired Darla Denman, the former "Queen of Country Music," and her entourage—including her ex-husband and still faithful manager, Big Bob Denman, and Roxie Jo, Big Bob's ambitious, much younger wife and Darla's opening act—breaks down outside Salt Lick, Tex. After hiring a couple of unlikely backup singers—beauticians, and down-home investigators Debbie Sue Overstreet and Edwina Perkins-Martin—Darla and company finally reach Midland for a benefit concert. When Roxie Jo is stabbed to death with a nail file in her dressing room, Darla confesses to the crime. Sure that Darla is innocent, Debbie Sue and Edwina set out to clear their favorite singer's name. Cash (sisters Pam Cumbie and Jeffery McClanahan) delivers one of her most entertaining cases yet. From the Back Cover

When someone makes a killing in the country music business, it's time to call in Debbie Sue and Edwina—the Domestic Equalizers—whose motto is, "Don't get mad, get evidence."

The career of former Queen of Country Music, Darla Denman, ain't what it used to be. No more big arenas—she's lucky to fill a barroom—and now she's forced to tour (by bus!) with the detestable Roxie Jo, current wife of Darla's manager/ex-husband. So when her rattletrap tour bus gives up the ghost outside tiny Salt Lick, Texas, the faded Nashville star's thrilled to find loyal fans (and sympathetic ears) in Debbie Sue Overstreet and Edwina Perkins-Martin.

But when her nemesis and upstart backup singer Roxie Jo turns up dead in her dressing room—which bears an uncanny resemblance to a cleaning-supply closet—Darla finds herself in more trouble than a Dixie Chick in merry old England. Luckily Debbie Sue and Edwina are not only the proud owners of Salt Lick's best beauty parlor but they also moonlight as private detectives! And if the Domestic Equalizers can't get to the bottom of a murderous musical mess, then no one can!

More About the Author

Dixie Cash is Pamela Cumbie and her sister Jeffery McClanahan. They grew up in West Texas during the great oil boom, an era filled with "real-life fictional" characters who cry to be written about. Pam has always had a zany sense of humor and Jeffery has always had a dry wit. Surrounded by cowboys and steeped in country-western music, when they can stop laughing long enough they work together creating hilarity on paper. Both live in Texas--Pam in the Fort Worth-Dallas Metroplex and Jeffery in a small town near Fort Worth.

Could kiss the sister team that make up the author Dixie Cash. During a very difficult time in my life after the death of both my children, I felt like I was losing my mind. I was looking for an outlet to occupy my thoughts and forced myself to pickup reading again. From the very first page to the very last, I found comfort & laughter once again. Though they are only fictional, the character's of this Cozy Mystery series have truly touched my life. I hope they continue to live if only in my mind, because they have actually saved me from myself.

The former "Queen of Country Music" Darla Denman is on tour with an entourage riding the bus with her. Her former spouse and still dedicated manager Big Bob and his second wife Roxie Jo are part of the retinue. In fact Roxie Joe is the opening act to Darla.

When they reach Salt Lick, Texas, Roxi Jo falls apart. Big Bob hires the Domestic Equalizers as backup singers though Debbie Sue Overstreet and Edwina Perkins-Martin are beauticians and sleuths. When the tour reaches Midland, Roxie Jo is found stabbed to death by a nail file in her dressing room; Darla confesses. The Domestic Equalizers believe Darla did not kill the trophy wife though they cannot fathom why their favorite singer confessed.

The latest Domestic Equalizers investigation (see Our Red Hot Romance Is Leaving Me Blue) is perhaps the best of the jocular series as the zany duet work a murder mystery in which a confession has already occurred. Fans will enjoy the humorous homespun wisdom of the BFFs as they cause their usual havoc while seeking evidence to prove their theory that their American idol is no stinking killer. Sisters Cash provide a delightful tale that will have amused fans humming I Can't Make You Love Me, but I Can Make You Leave.

I have read a few of these "domestic equalizer" books and I have to admit..... this is one of the better ones in the bunch. While this is obviously a series, it seems to be mandatory to read the first book, but after that.... you can read any of the others because they do happen to stand alone.

The quirky duo of Debbie Sue and Edwina, the domestic equalizers, are up to their shenanigans and a murder to solve. This time, it is to help a country music legend that Edwina (as well as the rest of the country) believed was dead. With Darla Denman's comeback tour about to begin, it was abruptly, yet temporarily stopped, when the country music star confesses to murdering her ex-husband's new wife, Roxie Jo. Well, needless to say (and to not offer a spoiler), Roxie Jo is a cruel and cold-hearted up and coming star that is burning bridges faster than a bridge can be built. With at least a handful of suspects, Debbie Sue and Edwina take on the case.... and why wouldn't they? They were asked to be backup singers for Darla's first show (of many) for her comeback.

As the story unfolds, we are blessed with that small town in Texas warmth and humor that these books offer. Light on the romance, but the southern-fried humor and how they solve the crime is what kept me reading until the end. I will admit, that as life in a small town in Texas can offer, the story did drag on just a little. Most of the redeeming qualities of humor and the pace finally picking up started closer to the end of the book. With twists and turns that at times can keep you guessing, this is one of the funnier books of the series that I have read. At least the focus was more on the dynamic southern-fried duo we grab this book to read than in previous books.
