How do you sing a song with great pathos and depression, yet make it a fabulous hit? Bonnie Raitt accomplishes both in this fine song of unrequited love. Surely everyone has loved someone that didn't return the favor. This song begs mercy from the love-object and time to let go and move on. The first time I heard this song, I fell in love with its haunting melody and I don't have to be depressed to enjoy it either!

Yep, it's a melancholy heartache song (one of the best), but I find Raitt's rendition of her song ultimately a healthy way to deal with the feeling that can well up when you think of a lost love, one that you really wanted to work out, and tried to save, but then realized it just wasn't going to be, and there was nothing you could do. It's easy to get lost in that despair and sadness. That's when hearing a song like this can help, because it reminds you that you're not alone, that others have been through these feelings and survived, and that's a good thing. But I suggest you do mix it up a bit with some music that takes the focus off of being melancholy and lost in your sadness, too--this song can be very, very sad if listened to TOO often while you're healing.

An oldie but goodie! I really like this song. It’s a sad song, and yet can be quite liberating if one understands that sometimes it’s best to give up the struggle. The love thing, the unrequited love thing, or the worn out ‘I’m done’ love thing is all too real. Overall the lyrics are well written and quite true to life. The music is lovely. What’s more, Rait’s voice is absolutely beautiful! I love her music!

Bonnie nailed this song. Her sultry voice adds just the right touch of sadness to the touching lyrics about unrequited love. Her pain is evident in every note but she also calms you with her acceptance that its never going to change.
