That doesn't mean that Amazon might not sell the pre-purchase boxes, just that pre-ordering the game here, on it's own, is not a pre-purchase. They still haven't settled the list of retailers who will be participating in the pre-purchase program.
For GW1, there was a pre-order box that cost about $10, that gave you bonuses, including beta access, with the $10 going towards the purchase price for the full game. Amazon sold those at the time and for at least some of the expansions, but I realize a full pre-purchase is a little different. Still hopeful, though.
I can see why Anet wouldnt wanna go thru this "pre-purchase"/pre-order theme with amazon, i mean I could very well pre-order GW2 one after another just to get beta keys and then cancel my order. I dont think anet likes that.
Im not upset I was just letting everybody know what the guy from Anet said on their twitter page. The last thing I need is fan boys like Brett crying in his pillow bc he thought he "pre-purchased" the game when all he did was pre-order it.
Yup, Amazon is definitely on the list for planned pre-purchase retailers (link was provided by GW 2 official Facebook page): http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/User:Stephane_Lo_Presti/GW2_prepurchase_retailers_list
I guess we'll have to wait and see come April 10th, now won't we?
Amazon will be part of the pre-purchase program for the Standard Edition starting April 10th. Since they can also sell simple pre-orders, which will only give a one day head start and no beta access, I'm guessing that those of us with an Amazon Pre-order will have to create a separate order for the pre-purchase.
Just to be clear, the pre-purchase is just that, you will be charged immediately for a pre-purchase. There will be a physical pre-purchase box available, but I'm not certain if Amazon will send a box with the code or just deliver it digitally. The pre-purchase will get you access to all future weekend beta events, (expected to be at least one per month, leading up to launch), a three day head start and a Ring with bonus stats.
A pre-order, which you don't pay for until the game ships, will only offer the one day head start, not the beta access or the Ring.
Currently there is no announced release date. They may announce the release date on April 10th, when the pre-purchase program goes live, however it's possible that they will not be ready to announce a release date. If there is no release date given on April 10th, it might be safe to assume that the game may not release for three months or more, so people should consider that before pre-purchasing. (I'll be pre-purchasing even with out a release date).
The list of pre-purchase partners is here: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/User:Stephane_Lo_Presti/GW2_prepurchase_retailers_list
Note that as of now, Amazon is not a Collector's Edition partner, so if you want a physical CE ($150), you will have to go with Gamestop. (They commented on Twitter that the CE will be extremely limited, so if you want it, you'll need to reserve it asap once the pre-purchase becomes available).
I'm still trying to find out if they will sell an upgrade later on from the Standard Edition to the Digital Deluxe Edition, which contains the same digital bonus items as the CE for about $80.
Details on the pre-purchase program are here: https://buy.guildwars2.com/
I talked a to customer service rep and they said the pre purchase will def be available. It will be available 2-3am est. (even though GW2 peeps said midnight, you must realize that is Seattle time. So for the east coast I am guessing 2-3am. please correct me if i am wrong)
