Really lovely Capitol debut of the opera/ musical comedy performer. Miss Alberghetti's soprano is set off beautifully in string arrangements of great standards.
A wonderful souvenir of a charming star & of a magical time in show biz when she graced the stage and screen.

Four years before her triumphant Broadway turn as the waifish Lili in "Carnival!", Anna Maria Alberghetti (a child prodigy and one of the most talented female singers of her generation) recorded this lovely album of romantic standards. Normally associated within the classical/operetta repertoire, it's delightful to have a record of Ms Alberghetti performing material which required a different vocal approach. Many opera singers have floundered spectacularly in their efforts to tackle a more "popular" sound (anyone remember Dame Kiri's dire, dull and dismal album of Gershwin tunes?). Not so Ms Alberghetti, who manages to retain her classical sensibilities, but in a more mellow, understated key.

Mixed in with the tried-and-true standards ("Tenderly", "I Only Have Eyes for You", etc.) are the less frequent "I Concentrate on You", "Too Young" and "Don't Blame Me", songs you normally don't encounter on a popular singer's solo platter, let alone a classical performer's debut in a new musical genre! The girl was fearless.

1957 was truly a banner year for the budding songbird, for as well as minting her I CAN'T RESIST YOU album for Capitol, Ms Alberghetti was getting ready to co-star alongside Sal Mineo as the Princess in Cole Porter's TV musical of "Aladdin", a high-rating smash which boosted her national profile considerably.

For old fans and new, this disc will be a real treasure. [Flare Records ROYCD259]
