5.0 out of 5 stars Ann Peebles is Al Green's long lost soul sista, May 3, 2002

This review is from: I Can't Stand the Rain (Audio CD)
For years now I have been yearning to hear more of Al Green at his best: those years that he spent recording for Hi Records. Sadly, I had exhausted his catalog. And then I found Ann Peebles. Here's the reverend Al Green in drag singing like an angel. The horns, the strings, the backup singers, her voice. It's like a very good drug. Buy this album. Songs like "If We Can't Trust Each Other" and "One Way Street" will put a smile on your face and make you consider loving mankind again. Go ahead, get your credit card out of your wallet and place that order. You'll be glad you did.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ann's Positive Vibrations, May 16, 2009
This review is from: I Can't Stand the Rain (Audio CD)
It's a short album but it puts it right where you want it.The title song alone is very much a unique form of music;minor 70's electronic mixed with that great HI soul sound.Basically Ann Peebles is the female version of Al Green, even down to her phrasing. But she's good, very good.Everything from the horns, the drumming and the general atmospherics of this recording has that strong sunny soul/R&B sound going that characterized Al's best recordings. There's nothing here that will suprise you much after that but once you get int the neighborhood of "If We Can't Trust Each Other","I'm Gonna Tear Your Playhouse Down" and "One Way Street" Peebles, who not only sings very genuinely but contributes to much of the songwriting really gets a chance to shin with some excellent adlibs. It's a sound best characterized as "sweet funk";true is doesn't have the kind of rhythmic and harmonic variations harder funk does but it's downhome AND in the groove all at once. Not only will Al Green fans feel right at home with this one but with that electronic burble hissing in the backround on some of these other cuts outside the title track, the sense of musical futurism along with the down to Earth 70's soul sound really helps to create a musical fusion of old and new that is more important to music of the last 5 or 6 years then many might wish to acknowledge.

This album by Ann Peebles is an outstanding R&B Soul album. Her soulful sexy easy to the ear voice is just beautiful singing the songs in this album. Simply said Ann's delivery on every song will make a wrong doing man do right and a good man keep on doing good. Buy this album the production quality on every song is well worth it.
