Best solo album of the year! Finally in the U.S.,
By
This review is from: Can't Stop Dreaming (Audio CD)
After several years of being only availble as an import Cd, Cant stop dreaming is finally in the US market. But the wait has been worth it. This is the best solo album by Daryl Hall by far, the most cohesive album, his previous works (Three hearts, Soul Alone and Sacred Songs) have hightlights but this is the most complete work. This is what American listeners have missed, the best singer-songwriter in history of pop music makes its best with songs like "Let me be the one", "What's in your world", and the single "Cab driver" (which is doing well in the jazz stations). The album has everything from very romantic tunes "Hold on to Me" "Holding Out for love", to dancing tunes "Never let me go" (this guy knows how to make a dance tune, really!) the uptempo "Fools rush in" (my personal favourite in the album)and even social concern in "All by Myself" very much in the Marvyn's Gaye style. So if you are bored with the current Adult contemporary artists (no offense, but there is lack of creativity) this is a river of refreshing sounds for your ears. Go and get it, you wont be disapointed! If you like more about Daryl Hall, its new album with Oates "Do It For love" is called, is a perfect match with this (by the way John Oates also has its own solo album, its first Phunk Shui, very good too).

Soul Music for Aging Children,

Daryl Hall's latest solo album, "I Can't Stop Dreaming" has been released on the heels of the first new Hall and Oates CD in several years! This is truly an embarassment of riches. The Hall & Oates CD is perfectly wonderful, but for my money, the nod goes to this solo work. "Cab Driver" opens the set and establishes a soulful groove from which the mood doesn't stray. Hall's voice remains a marvel and there are several radio-worthy cuts here that should propel this classic artist back to the top of the charts. At a time when pop music seems perfunctory at best, the solid efforts of Daryl Hall stand head and shoulders above the mainstream tedium and show that soul music still lives!

I have always like Daryl Hall when he did his thing with John Oates. But this cd took it to another level for me. I think I was having one of the worst work days of my life and they played "Cabdriver" on the jazz station. Ever since that moment ,I had been on a constant hunt to find this cd. "Cabdriver" has to the be the HARDEST jazz song ever recorded. Me and my dad constantly fight over this cd. I think it's an excellent cd to add to any music collection. Rap, R&B, Jazz, Rock, whatever. "Can't Stop Dreaming" is in there with the best of them. I love his music! It flawlessly transcends age, race and whatever barriers that are out there.
Thanks, Daryl Much Love

In the current world of "Diva De Jour" and corporate-created sensationalism, lost in the mix are the artists who have progressed over their long careers. Their work gets better with passing time. Billy Joel certainly comes to mind (one of the few who still has strong sales). I would put Sting in that catagory, as well as James Taylor. Donna Summer sang better than ever on her VH-1 special. But demographics dictate that these artists do not get airplay nor support from their labels.DARYL HALL FITS IN THIS CATAGORY!! Along with the 1993 release, SOUL ALONE, you have some incredible songs that eclipse his earlier work. In particular, on CAN'T STOP DREAMING, there are three or four songs that will blow you away. "Something About You" is a terrific ballad. "Cab Driver" is as good as adult contemporary gets, just great. "What's In Your World", is one of the best songs of its type to come along in a long time, I got chills hearing it. And lastly, the re-working of the Hall&Oates classic "She's Gone" is breath-taking--he covers his own hit with the perspective of two decades of living. Just a stellar acoustic guitar-driven arrangement. The lower key signature (from C down to A flat) gives it a fresh new sound. He is in fine voice, with more notes now in the bottom range, the control is still there and his reading of the lyric better and more selective of when to belt and use acapella, etc. This is what good music is all about. I can't fathom how anyone couldn't like this record. Also, "Never Let Me Go" is a solid dance number and would fit into any club mix. The younger generation would dig it if they were just exposed to it. The differences in music from the late 90's vs. the 70's are not as profound as say, the 70's vs. the 50's. The beat is the same and the instrumentation is the same, save for some advances in technology (MIDI for example). The price for the import was more than worth it. Sound quality and production top-flight. Get this CD and share it with your friends. And while you're at it, pick up SOUL ALONE and enjoy some REAL music. In closing, I cannot believe this recording was not released domestically--gives new meaning to the word, "injustice"

Can't Stop Dreaming is a treasure waiting to be found. I first got a copy from a friend in 1997. I still listen to this great work of art. This is Daryl at his purest most soulful best. He is truly the most underrated artist in our generation. So far this piece of work is the greatest piece not released to the world.

I luv this man when he performs his solo hits. He is such a genius. I appreciate the work that u did man. Good job.
Some of my fav. songs are Cabdriver and the acoustic remake of "She's Gone". Y'know you must come back w/ more like this on your next solo album 'cuz you can surely rock. This CD is definitely a classic w/ so much varied styles of jazz, R&B, rock, pop and rock. Recommend it if they love Steely Dan, Simply Red, Michael McDonald, The Doobie Brothers, Slim Man, Bobby Caldwell, Miles Davis, Boyz II Men, Alicia Keys, Brian McKnight, Lisa Stansfield, Barry White, OutKast, Kanye West, Twista, Marvin Gaye, Quincy Jones, Grover Washington, etc. Much from your #1 big fan, Henry

After waiting two 2 years I finially have "Can't Stop Dreaming" and I "Can't Stop Listening". Being a long time fan of Hall and Oates, I am very familiar with all of their music and also all of Daryl's solo projects and this CD is one of the best. Can't Stop Dreaming is a musical experience. Every song is wonderful. There is no skipping tracks on this CD and some you will have to listen to twice! Congradulations to Daryl for being the MASTER of ROCK & SOUL!

I bought this cd about 4 months ago - thought the price was steep - but was so happy I bought it. Daryl has never sounded better - these songs really showcase his voice and what his range is. If you like the new one "Do It For Love" then you'll love this....also be sure to get "Phunk Shui" which is John Oate's solo project - it is worth the price as well. John is more than just a back up singer. Both can stand on their own or do the job as the best selling duo ever! You won't be disappointed by this album....

this is a good month for me , first a new Hall and Oatescd which is one of there best if not the best of there's and now a solo cd from Daryl , I have all of his solo cd's and this is the best one by far. If the 80's were theres than they are back on track to haveing it happen all over again. 'cab driver' is soul- ful and a sharp piece of music 'let me be the one' is on the same level and this is a winner all the way and Im very happy to have some new music to listen to .

I kept on hearing the version of the Hall and Oates classic"She's Gone" from this c.d. on the radio and could never find it in any stores. It not only is a great version , its worth the price of the c.d. If you are a Daryl Hall and John Oates fan, this is a must. As another reviewer wrote; I have Can't Stop Dreaming and can't stop listening! All the tracks are superb and Daryls' voice is excellent. |
