A couple nice live tracks., September 29, 2005
This review is from: Can't Stop 1 (Audio CD)
"Can't Stop" was the third single from the Red Hot Chili Pepper's "By the Way". As was done with every other single, it was released in two parts, in this case each part contained two live tracks. This CD (with the brown cover) contains live versions of "If You Have to Ask" and a live jam ctitled "Christchurch Fireworks Music".
The title track, one fo the most overplayed songs in Chili Peppers history, finds the band exploring a vein similar to their past, with a pseudo-rap vocal and a somewhat cleaner take on their old funk-punk sound. It's an ok song, but they've done better in this vein.
"If You Have to Ask" is typically a highlight of Chili Peppers live shows, the band clearly loves playing it, it's always full of energy and excitement and features an extended jam where John Frusciante and Flea both take extended features. "Christchurch Fireworks Music" is an intriguing piece-- a jam created evidentally to accompany some fireworks that largely consists of feedback and effects experiments by Frusciante occasionally accompanied by the rest of the band.
All in all, this is a pretty interesting single--probably not for everyone (at least "Christchuch Fireworks Music"), but worth hearing.

interesting but not original, September 4, 2003
This review is from: Can't Stop 1 (Audio CD)
as a longtime chili pepper fan i like to say that i would rather a moderatly good studio b-side than an absolutely mind blowing live rendition of a previously released track, but these two live tracks somewhat sit in the middle for me. its good to here some fresh sounds on here(christchurch fireworks music) and the extended ending on if you have to ask, like i said very interesting but not as original as previous efforts.

There are better Pepper b-sides out there, July 7, 2003
This review is from: Can't Stop 1 (Audio CD)
The b-sides on this single are 2 live tracks. "If You Have to Ask" is really good. What I like about this song is that the band always extends the ending and it's always completely different from the last time I saw or heard it. This one doesn't dissappoint at all, a good slinky jam between John, Chad and Flea. The next track is a bunch of guitar pedal manipulation by John during a fireworks display which I wish I could have seen AND heard because just hearing it isn't enough. It's totally interesting and I'm glad they put things out that are different from the norm from time to time but you probably won't be blasting this one in the car.
