Can't Muck With the Pup,
By
This review is from: Can't You Take a Joke? (Audio CD)
This is their first release, and my favorite. The easiest description for the music at this time is short, humorous hardcore. But it's actually got some crossover/thrash mixed in with the sound, and some nimble bass grooves. The lyrics are snotty, profane and in extremely poor taste. But that's a plus, you understand. The whole album clocks in at half an hour or less, and the songs range from 40 seconds to three minutes. The shorter songs still have a recognizable song structure, though, and are not just formless sonic blurs. Musically, think metal/hardcore hybrid S.O.D., but instead of their fat guitar sound, it's more high-end Slayerish-sounding with some razor-sharp leads in a few places. All in all, a very accomplished, original-sounding release for a band that was either still in high school or just recently graduated... and they're from Jersey, no less!Mucky Pup is of course famous for performing the B-side "U Stink But I Love U" on the Bloom County Billy & The Boingers Bootleg flexi-disc. It's a great little song, but it's not on this album... it was re-recorded for the second album (which made MTV airplay, introduced on Headbanger's Ball by a denim-jacketed Adam Curry!) The original album was re-released with some extra live tracks, but what Mucky Pup needs to do is put their early demo on the end of this release... it's got a few tunes that made the album and a few that didn't, which I'd love to get on CD.
