The real Samba,
By Raul Martins Dias (ronai@cd-graf.com.br) (Brasilia, Brazil) - See all my reviews

While groups like Tchan and Cia. do Pagode are spoiling the Samba, I'm happy to see that it can survive in the voice of great artists. Beth Carvalho is one of these artists, and she did a great job in this record, singing the "Samba Paulista", with musics of many great artists from Sao Paulo. You should at least have a look.

It's not parade samba, no bateria, but more bossa-nova type, in what sounds like a small venue in Sao Paolo. The most moving Brazilian music I've ever heard and that is saying something. Fantastic band as well. Her voice speaks of experience and a certain jaded, yet still electric, jazz style. You hear Waldir Da Fonseca for a few seconds on Outro Amor, more please! |
