5.0 out of 5 stars A successful turning point to a standard stylish singer, May 18, 2003
By
This review is from: Cantar (Audio CD)

This album marks the second turning point in Gal Costa's career since her first album "Domingo" with Caetano Veloso, a Bossa Nova album. After that, she engaged in the "Tropicalia" cultural movement and her singing became agressive.

In this second turning point, Gal Costa returns to tenderness, to more elaborated performances and to lower keys in a clear disposition to gain a place among the great singers, notably beside the remarkable Elis Regina.

She was successful in this album but the comparison to Elis Regina remains an unreachable dream.

She counts on Joao Donato as her arranger in this album and her renditions of his compositions "A Ra" and "Ate Quem Sabe" are killing.

5.0 out of 5 stars One Great Song Worth the Price of the Album, March 1, 2003
This review is from: Cantar (Audio CD)
Ate Quem Sabe (roughly "Until Who Knows") is a fabulous song, written by Joao Donato. Gal Costa's version of it is well worth the price of this CD. Her pacing of this slow ballad is superb. If you don't speak Portuguese, find a Brazilian to translate the words. Ate Quem Sabe is a classic that merits recognition as such.
