This book was even better than the last. Finally Cesare is succumbing to the darkness that is within his soul. Gone is the man who did not know what to embrace and enters the man who is embracing the darker side. I'm sad to know there is only one novel left because it can not span all of the Borgia time. I wondered how much time they could cover in this one novel and while it seems to be minimal it hardly is. Still, I fear for the next book, but I fell in love with this one.

The drama between Cesare and his family and friends is heating up. Cesare is finding it harder and harder to keep his demons at bay with Chiaro gone. Lucretia is missing Chiaro very badly also and facing another political mariage to a man she doesn't know and she carries a secret. Chiaro is in serious trouble himself, having been captured and is spending time in the torture chamber. The story is pretty intense at this point with things and I found this volume kept me turning to the next page with anticipation.
