5.0 out of 5 stars An awesome analysis of Precolumbian Poetry, April 23, 2009
This review is from: Cantares Mexicanos: Songs of the Aztecs (Hardcover)
Some authorities dismiss Bierhorst's analysis of the Cantares, but It is with keeping the modern descendants of indigenous poetry and music. The analysis of the poems as "ghost dance" incantations is exciting and in keeping with mesoamerican and Uto-Aztecan language tradition.

3.0 out of 5 stars A collection of Aztec historical poetry., April 12, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Cantares Mexicanos: Songs of the Aztecs (Hardcover)
I read this book as and made a research paper about this book. This book is not a very easy book to read. The poetry can be sometime very obscure. I enjoyed this book and learned a lot about the aztecs through this book. This book is a great historical piece of literature. Although the poetry can be difficult to interpret but its literary allusions to nature, plants and animals are excellent. A person can truly be fascinated with this book as I was while it was being read. Bierhorst does an excellent job of explaining this book and gives great historical, background about this book. His introduction, notes, and translations really assisted to me to better understand the Aztecs, their poetry, their culture and civilization. If someone advidly loves studying Native American Culture, this book will truly enlighten you. Cantares Mexicanos : Songs of the Aztecs enlightened me.
