A terrific bargain, June 30, 2000
This review is from: Canteloube - Chants d'Auvergne & Ravel - Boléro, Sheherazade / Arleen Augér, ECO - Pesek, LPO - Tortelier (Audio CD)
At a 2-for-the-price-of-1 offering, the Virgin Classics <Canteloube: Chants d'Auvergne/Ravel: Bolero> (7243 561742-2) is quite a Grabbit. Featuring Arleen Auger in just over 49 minutes of the Chants and later Ravel's "Scheherazade" and "Vocalise," this collection cannot be beat when one considers the quality of the vocals and the price. For the Canteloube, she is accompanied by the English Chamber Orchestra under Yan Pascal Tortelier, while the Ravel CD is with The Philharmonic under Libor Pesek.
First released in 1988 and 1992 respectively as singles, both were generally well received by the critics. The Ravel disc also includes "Bolero," "Alborada del gracioso," "Pavane," and "La Valse." The only real drawback is the lack of the text; but at this price, one could not really expect it all. Also, as lovely as the Chants are sung here, they will never replace the complete sets on Vanguard label with Netania Davrath rendering idiomatic versions of this wonderful music. But this Virgin set will sit well in the French section of your collection.
