Canticle of Christmas,

This review is from: Canticle of Christmas: My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior (Paperback)
This is a wonderful Christmas Cantata that can be put together quickly. The earlier version had a pink and green cover and was spiral bound. I actually like that 1991 spiral bound version better than the new 'red' cover that is stapled..
'Canticle of Christmas' is Messiah- like in that there are recitatives, solos leading into large numbers. Sectionals could sing instead of solos if needed. This Cantata can be used by a variety of choirs ie small group, small sanctuary choir and large group choirs. The music is written well enough to be enjoyed by all kinds of singers. As a voice teacher I know I have to feed the souls of all my singers of all abilities when I select literature. . I have also taken specific pieces 'out' and used them as individual pieces on Christmas Eve and as service music during Advent, Christmas Eve & Day as well as Epiphany. . Have even had a soprano youth choir sing selections although it is arranged for SATB. Can be used in so many ways. 'Stable Prayer' is absolutely beautiful as is 'Come, Believe in His Name', 'They Worshipped Him/Sovereign Lord', 'One Night in Coldest Winter', 'Jesus, O Holy Child', and 'Light of the Star'. Again, I used full choir as well as ensembles when I've used this cantata. If you have soloists then it is fun to use them. Remember that this cantata has many pieces that can also be used alone for introits and service music during other years. Beautiful writing. Of course, it is Fettke and Kirkland! There is a very accessible and beautifully written 'O, Holy Night', 'Virgin Mary Had a Baby Boy', 'Come, Thou Long- expected Jesus' for any ability of choir. And the piece 'When They Saw the Star/ Rejoice with exceeding Great Joy' is just wonderfully happy and rich; exciting!. All choirs love these arrangements regardless of their ability. This cantata really gives you a great deal of useful music. Choirs with small numbers or with uneven sectionals can do this; and large choirs sound wonderful too. The music is written very well so is satisfying to the trained singers in your choir as well as the beginning singers. If you are looking for a cantata for Christmas that is beautiful, lively and rich, 'Canticle of Christmas' would be great. You could also use individual pieces all thru Advent thru Ephiphany culminating in the actual performance. OH! I forgot to mention 'Shepherds Beside Themselves'. A comic piece for the men in your choir. You could use a very small group or a large section. At first you may have misgivings, but give it a shot. All the men just loved it as did the rest of the choir and the congregation. An absolute favorite! I first did the full performance in the early 90's. And have pulled out service music ever since for the last many years as well as doing it many other times. You can also 'not do' the first opening number or the last and substitute other pieces from the Cantata depending on the 'feeling' you want when it is performed. This is not an over the top theatrical cantata, but will fill your choir and congregation with great joy as they sing and listen to the beautiful writing. Calm, ethereal pieces, to satisfyingly rich fast, bigger selections. Great any day you decide to perform it, but really beautiful on Christmas Eve, and Joyous on Christmas Day. Hope this helps! (Please forgive all typos....cannot find my GLASSES!! :)
