5.0 out of 5 stars Brazilian Musicians Perform Music of Timeless Emotional Appeal, September 16, 2009

Edu Lobo couldn't be mediocre if he tried, and Cantiga De Longe is one of the greatest performances of a great composer and musician. Played by a small group
featuring Hermeto Pascoal on piano and flute, all songs on this CD speak with intimacy and eloquence. Compare the independence of Lobo's guitar work to his
singing and prepare to be astounded. This is really the work of a rare talent. Casa Forte and Zanzibar may be the two best known songs but everything on the
CD is at the highest creative level. Lobo's former wife Wanda Sa contributes background vocals on Aguaverde and adds an ethereal presence. The title song
features rhythms with very precise hand claps. It must have taken some serious rehearsal time. Then again, with these musicians, maybe not. Marta E Romao
was done by Paul Desmond on a recording from the same year, 1969. His version was fine; Lobo's is definitive. What a great song, and it's not available
apart from the recordings just named.
Musicians take note: Lobo likes to write in modes other than the usual major and minor. Doing so eliminates an obvious leading tone and adds unpredictability to his work.

I can't recommend this CD highly enough.

I love Brazilian music and spent 5 years there back in the 1960's. As an impoverished Peace Corps volunteer, my one luxury was buying D-cell batteries to power my record player. My favorite record to fall asleep to was this one: Cantiga de Longe by Edu Lobo. He's not well known in the States, but should be. His music is gentle, sweet, and complex. You don't have to understand the language to appreciate the emotion it conveys.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sotaque sota-ta-ta-que nordestino.., March 3, 2005
Nice again to have this reissued, 2nd time on CD!

The incredible composer/musician Eduardo Lobíssimo em parceiro com *O Bruxo* , Hermetão Pascoal , this is one of those recordings that is called "Necessary item" for any entusiast of Brasilian musics!

This recording features Edu at his most primal, and true to his nordestino origins, and no other producer but Hermeto for this legendary session. Many Edu Lobo recordings are lush with orchestration, and complex arrangements, here Edulobiana dictates more "earthy" and "organic" sounds, as the cliché terms are usually not my choice, they fit to describe this time, sorry!

The famous compositions "Casa Forte" and "Zanzibar" are centerpiece, these songs have been covered so many times by other artistas in loving tribute, both in Brasil and around the world.(The great USA funk/soul group Earth, Wind and Fire even made cover of "Zanzibar" on the "Keep Your Head to the Sky" recording! )

Too many words would spoil the surprise once you listen to the sounds! Hermeto stamps this recording with his usual genius, assisting his musical soul and good humor to every pore of this recording (the "organic " theme continues, HAHA!).

1 million stars, brigadão mestres!
