After a remarkable duet with the great Eddie Gomez, Tania Maria offers a new album recorded with several musicians in Brazil and in France. Tania Maria is at her best in a repertoire of new compositions supported once again by her grand piano and inimitable voice. A great lady of Brazilian Jazz!
This is a gorgeous album all the way through, showing off Tania Maria's many exquisite talents and seductive gifts. Ultimately, what you hear is Maria's heart beating. For those who have had enough of the cold winter, this album is 10 tracks of summer strolling along the beach in the late afternoon, when the evening clouds get thin and long.
An indispensable recording from a multi-talented Brazilian jazz artist who lifts you up and gets your blood going. --JazzWax.com, January 2013
Though Canto is being promoted as Brazilian pianist and vocalist Tania
Maria s 25th release, its 10 tracks, culled from 2005 and 2008 studio
sessions in Paris and São Paulo, actually pre-date 2011 s Tempo, her
cozy pairing with bassist Eddie Gomez. In addition, half the
selections are revisited from earlier projects. Still, there's an
invigorating freshness to this album, a vivid urgency that is
irresistible. --Jazz Times, Christopher Loudon
