Frankie and Jerry,

This review is from: Canto a mi ídolo... Frankie Ruiz (Audio CD)
Frankie Ruiz is my fave salsa singer. His voice is one of a kind and his lyrics are just as unique. Jerry is another one of my faves but I have to admit that I was a little biased when I bought the CD. I didn't quite like the idea of someone singing songs that I'm so used to hearing Frankie sing. I didn't think that Jerry would be able to pull this off but he did. Though I know in the back of my mind that no one can sing Frankie Ruiz songs like Frankie, Jerry does a good job at this tribute to him. We couldn't have asked for a better person to do this than him. My fave songs on the album are "Puerto Rico", "Para Darte Fuego", "Mi Libertad", and "Separemos Nuestras Vidas". I recommend this to anyone that misses Frankie as much as I do and would like to hear a different take on his songs. No one can take Frankie's place as the "Father of Salsa" and I think Jerry made this CD to remind everyone that there is and will only ever will be one KING!!!!! I Love You Frankie!!!!

The hits I heard as a young man, sung by the now deceased Frankie Ruiz, are sung by Jerry Rivera on this album. Jerry was a HUGE Frankie Ruiz fan, and when the chance came, he sang Frankie's songs and put an album together. If you like Jerry and Frankie's music, this is an album you should buy. There is not a dull track on this.

Out of his league,
By A Customer
This review is from: Canto a mi ídolo... Frankie Ruiz (Audio CD)
Jerry Rivera does not have the voice nor the "soul" to sing the classics of Frankie Ruiz. His sucess is due to his amazing band and great songwriters who have been able to compensate for his short comings as a singer. I'm not saying he is completely horrible, I admit I own his greatest hits album. However, he cannot be mentioned in the same league with the all time greats of salsa, such as Frankie Ruiz. Someone of his caliber should stick to what made him famous, catchy love songs.

BUEN DISCO PERO...,
By FERMIN PLATA (LOS ANGELES, CA USA) - See all my reviews

ES UN BUEN DISCO, NUEVOS AREGLOS, PERO LA VOZ DE JERRY RIVERA NO ES TAN "SWEET" COMO EN DISCOS ANTERIORES, COMO UN GUSTO PERSONAL DE JERRY RIVERA ESTA BIEN, PERO COMO ADMIRADOR INCONDICIONAL DE FRANKIE RUIZ... ME PARECE UN DISCO UN POCO SOSO, CREO QUE CON OTRO PRODUCTOR MUSICAL JERRY RIVERA HUBIESE PODIDO HACER UN VERDADERO HOMENAJE VOCAL A EL PADRE DE LA SALSA MI INMORTAL FRANKIE RUIZ!

Interesting CD for a change and a good compilation. the instrumentation part of the CD is pretty good, nevertheless Jerrys voice is lacking in some songs... no match for the original songs.
If you liked FRuiz, however, it might be interesting to have it in your collection - but there were better releases this year.

A well-intentioned but disastrous project.,

Unfortunately, Jerry Rivera does not posess the soul or voice of the late Frankie Ruiz so this tribute CD (while well-intentioned) is disastrous. His cover versions of Frankie's classics "Desnudate Mujer","Tu Eres", "El Camionero" and "Separemos Nuestras Vidas" are ludicrous at best. Frankie was one of the 1980's and '90s best salsa soneros and Jerry Rivera is quite simply NOT in his league.

His Idol Would Be Proud,

If Frankie Ruiz is looking down on Jerry Rivera, he must have a big smile on his face. Rivera has an amazing voice and he has revived the hits that made Ruiz a legend. For the hard core Ruiz fans, La Cura and Puerto Rico on this CD will not dissapoint.
