5.0 out of 5 stars exotic and uncliched
yes, im using that word 'exotic', because this music is quiet literaly, exotic. Tracks like 'Essarai' drown out the empty noises at work and fill my head with visions of swaying green palm trees, milky clouds touching the amber red horizon that meets the island shores filled with white sand and windswept cliffs. 3.0 out of 5 stars Cantoma - Cantoma
Cantoma's self-titled debut mines the well-worn vein of "world ambient," with a special emphasis on Iberian Peninsula and the surrounding regions. And while there's always a threat of falling into soporific Ottmar Liebert territory, Cantoma retains enough of a rhythmic presence to avoid the dreaded "new age" tag. Indeed, "Marisi," the opening track, melds the Spanish...

Expertly crafted to be an unboring and sophisticated chillout music. Perfect for laying out in a hammock, lovemaking or staring at at distant sunsets.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing, nigh perfect album. Only one thing keeps it from being a holy grail..., May 15, 2006

...Track 9, The Call. For me, it just doesn't jive with all the other songs, and keeps it from being a CD grail... a "fire and forget" CD. A CD that you can really just toss in and not have to worry about that one or two tracks that you always want to skip past to get to the good ones. I truly, truly wish it would have just been removed.

Apart from that, you have 9 smooth, downtempo, laid back tracks. Production values are high. Every other track are ones I can listen to over and over again. It makes you feel like you're on a secluded beach in the carribean or Bora Bora in a beachhouse on the back deck, looking out on the water as the sun sets. The lush beats, the smooth sounds, everything works together. A polished album.

Just perfect. In spite of track 9, it's perfect. I have 80+ CDs, but there's always a spot in my player for it. Buy it. Get a copy for your friends. I have. It's just that good.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfection, January 28, 2006
This review is from: Cantoma (Audio CD)
This album is amazing from start to finish and it perfectly flows from one track to another effortlessly. The whole album is great but some of the notable songs are the spanish guitar splashed Marisi as well as Essarai and a nice dub influenced Overtime.

Phil Mison fused together an exotic masterpiece that makes you feel like you're at an outside lounge bar in Madrid and your only concern is when your next martini will be brought to you buy that hot spanish waitress. A wonderfully sophisticated downtempo/chill mix that makes you feel like you never have to leave the land of sun, sangria, and nice breezes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Brilliant, April 25, 2006

Seldom do you see a recording get a full 5 stars, but this one is definitely deserving of it's current overall rating. My only complaint about Cantoma is that they only have the one CD!! If they had a dozen more titles, I'd buy them all. I have played this CD no less than 20 times, and I never tire of it. It's on the "top shelf" of my cd rack. Every track is as good as , or better than the one before it. If you like substance to your music, this is the cd! Chill/ambient mixed with a latin beat. Fabulous. I hope there is a follow up CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best thing I've found all year, July 22, 2007
This review is from: Cantoma (Audio CD)
I came across the track, "Pandajero" about a year ago and loved it. It always ended up going on my various playlists. But for some reason I never checked out this album until this week. I've given it several listens now and it's blown me away. It's a really warm, sexy, earthy album that still manages to have this cool detachment about it too. I don't think there's a single dud on it. My favorites are probably: "Essarai" (really nicely-done female vocal track) / "Pandajero" (warm guitar world music sound) / "Marisi" (melancholy but gorgeous) / "Balafia" (beautiful violin solo sample). This album is worth every penny.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic, March 23, 2007

Everything I could have asked for. Nice flowing melodies, good subtle beats and good lyrics(only a song or 2). A very enjoyable down-tempo disc. It has deserved every star it has been given in the reviews. I highly recommend this disc to anyone looking for down-tempo. Sounded like a tinge of a latin style flavor, but an outstanding release. I hope he does another one!

5.0 out of 5 stars to simply agree with the other reviewers is an understatement, October 1, 2006
This review is from: Cantoma (Audio CD)
After listening to pandora.com, etoile came streaming through my speakers and i knew i just had to have it. But, being the skeptic that I am, i decided to listen to a couple more full length tracks from Cantoma's Myspace site and that led me here where I read all 7 five star reviews.

I ordered it, it arrived, and I've been chillin out daily to this album...its rare when every track on an album is stuns your senses and forces your head to bob. Favorite tracks by far are Marisi, Cosmopole, and Etoile. But thats not to say that the rest of the album isn't fantastic.

I recommend this to anybody and everybody regardless of their musical taste. THis album is a rich, multi dimensional, mood-setting masterpiece and you'd be a fool not to buy this after having read this comment.

Buy it and enjoy!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars An unexpected treasure, December 4, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Cantoma (MP3 Download)
I heard "Cosmopole" on SomaFM and wanted to get that track right after listening to it for the first time. I listened to the previews of the other tracks and decided to get the entire album and am really happy with that decision. Very nice beats and easy listening. One of the best albums I've ever purchased given how high I've rated the various tracks. "Early till late" is probably my least favorite because the tempo is so much slower than the rest of the tracks, but is not that bad on its own. I will definitely keep an eye out for more material from this band.

If you are like me and don't want too much synthetic electronica and very few vocals then I think you will be happy with this one. It's a keeper.
