This provides a good basic understanding of the history of Canton. I was born and raised there but I moved away by choice 40 years ago. Good information for anyone who cares about history of this area. I would have liked it if it had more detail, some of which I could have provided.

Canton: A Journey Through Time (by Kimberly A. Kenney) is an excellent book detailing the long and storied history of the great American city known as Canton, Ohio. Historic photographs are included throughout the book. From the founding of the city in 1805 to the present day, this book details everything you'd like to know about the city where the very heart and soul of America lies, Canton, Ohio. From its humble beginnings, to its historic railroads, to the rise of manufacturing, to it being the home of the Pro Football Hall Of Fame and the hometown of one of America's presidents, this book is a must have for anybody who appreciates reading about a truly American city. This book also discusses the history of Stark County, the presidential election of 1896, the presidency of William McKinley, Belden Village, the Tuscarawas River, modes of transportation throughout the years, the Canton Bulldogs football team, the Canton Symphony Orchestra, football legend Jim Thorpe, Canton during the Great Depression years and World War II, plus a whole lot more.
The city of Canton has many historical sites in addition to just the Pro Football Hall Of Fame. The National Football League (NFL) was founded in Canton in 1920. The sport's hall of fame is proudly located in Canton. It's very impressive and a great place to visit. But Canton is also the hometown of the 25th President Of The United States, William McKinley (1843-1901), who served from 1897-1901. The McKinley National Memorial and McKinley Museum are a short distance from downtown Canton. The museum not only has many interesting artifacts from the McKinley era of the late nineteenth century, but also a science center, including a planetarium. Canton is also home to The National First Ladies' Library, also a great place to visit and very impressive. This library is located inside the Ida Saxton McKinley House, which is the childhood home of Ida Saxton McKinley, wife of president McKinley. The tour of the library actually takes place after the first part of the tour, which is a tour of the Education and Research Center, located at the old bank building at 205 Market Avenue South. After the tour of the Education Center ends, a short two minute walk is required to get to the library, located at 331 Market Avenue South. Both attractions are very impressive. Canton also has two classic car museums, including one located in the basement of The McKinley Grand Hotel in downtown Canton, which is located directly across the street from the Ida Saxton McKinley house. The McKinley Grand Hotel is very impressive and is obviously named after and dedicated to William McKinley. I think there's a good chance that after reading this book it will make you want to visit the most American of American cities, Canton, Ohio. There is a lot to do and discover in Canton, Ohio. Your imagination can help you extract maximum enjoyment out of this great city. Highly recommended book. |
