5.0 out of 5 stars Phenomenal, June 8, 2003

I remember the first time I heard this cd playing in the background at The Heartland Cafe, in the Rogers park neighborhood of Chicago sometime in the mid 1990's. I asked the owner who was playing and he commented, Mezcla. He lent me the cd and for the 1st time I heard the enchanting voice of Lazaro Ros. I couldn't put the cd down. 1 yr later, Mezcla came to the Heartland, sans Lazaro Ros and even though they were fantastic and played some of the songs from the cd, it wasn't the same w/o Lazaro Ros. Bottom line, this cd is a MUST for any world music collection! It blends the traditional with contemporary. It is truly a work of art! Ashe!

5.0 out of 5 stars Ancient Spirits Call to Hearts in the '90s, August 23, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Cantos (Audio CD)
Lazaro Ros approached Mezcla with the thought that in order to live forever these timeless songs needed to be played in a new way, and the idea works so well it becomes music you have to hear every day! The jazz/rock Afro-Cuban fusion group Mezcla's respect for the material and their consummate arranging, musicianship and choral back-up skills combine so beautifully with the voice of Cuba's great 'akpuon' that knowledgable music lovers and folks 'in the religion' alike will find this disc indispensible.

5.0 out of 5 stars Santeria Music With Modern Tones, March 2, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Cantos (Audio CD)
The album contains the same santeria songs found in Lazaro's Olorun album. It is a collection of santeria lyrics presented in modern music like jazz, calipso, salsa, etc. For those looking for the true, sacred, religious beat of santeria drums, this album will be a disappointment. However, I liked it because the music is a joyous and light-hearted version of Lazaron's Olorun album. END
