4.0 out of 5 stars Great for Beginners
I recieved this book yesterday, and found a fountain of good information. Author Alisa Burke starts the book with definitions of tools and supplies, then on to stretching and priming canvas. (Most if not all projects are unstretched) There are 38 pages of techniques, with color photos for the steps, along with some helpful hints called "in the mix."

3.0 out of 5 stars good
i received this book last week and found some useful tips in it. however, there was a lot of ideas that involved using a sewing machine, and several gift items such as a canvas clutch or purse. very cool ideas, but not exactly what i was looking for. alisa burke is a very talented artist with some very cool graffiti inspired work and if you are into more jewelry making...

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for Beginners, June 27, 2008

I recieved this book yesterday, and found a fountain of good information. Author Alisa Burke starts the book with definitions of tools and supplies, then on to stretching and priming canvas. (Most if not all projects are unstretched) There are 38 pages of techniques, with color photos for the steps, along with some helpful hints called "in the mix."

Most of the projects are beautiful, fun, and useful. There are several I want to try right away, including the tote, pouch, canvas beads, and i-Pod case. This book fullfilled my need of the basics of working with canvas, stretched, or unstretched. After learning the basics, you can easily craft whatever you want.

I would have given this book five stars, but I think some of the techniques could have been done more in depth. Otherwise I am glad I bought it, and it will get a lot of use.

5.0 out of 5 stars Creative Freedom finds a home!, August 4, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Canvas Remix: Techniques For Creating Mixed-Media Accessories (Paperback)
Alisa Burke has finally produced a book which assumes that the reader is ready for some creative freedom, thus inspiring with ideas and techniques without the need for step by step, copy-cat instructions. This is not a book for those with no idea where to start - this is a book for those who are or wish to be creative and just need the inspiration to let it flow!!

Canvas Remix has given me the passion to pursue some ideas I wasn't sure I was ready to attempt, and to be comfortable with the results one way or another - no rules to say you cant try a project again! It's wild, its fun and it's free-thinking. Be ready to look inside yourself and let your creative diva out!

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspiration pieces galore!, November 22, 2008

This book is fabulous for inspiration. Many techniques for multi-layered designs are demonstrated, and they are all colorful and unique. It doesn't give the impression that it is a book for beginners, but a beginner can certainly begin here. In short, this book made my mind start racing about the things I want to create myself!

To those who complain that this is "a book for beginners" I'd really like to know if they were truly expecting a book for their expert level, and if so, do they really want to copy another artist's creative process to the last detail? As Traci Bautista says, it's important to make your OWN mark.

I think this book is absolutely wonderful for showing readers how to start with an idea and then RUN with it for themselves. Definitely lots of thought provoking colorful eye candy, with a touch of funkiness for inspiration.

On top of the technique instructions, you have 24 separate projects in this book to get you started on your own path. My only wish for this book is that there was even more of it! I hope there is a second book with more that the author wants to share. Not having access to her workshops, I would LOVE to see Ms. Burke create a video demonstrating her techniques and some projects - it would make a lovely companion to this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspired by Canvas Remix!, September 30, 2008
This review is from: Canvas Remix: Techniques For Creating Mixed-Media Accessories (Paperback)
I really love this book! It is full of vibrant photos and straightforward techniques that are simple enough for youngsters but totally fun for adults! Alisa Burke has taken a unique approach to creating within one medium-not an easy task- and has come up with all kinds of techniques and projects that the everyday person, without drawing or painting skills can actually accomplish. She also has come up with projects that are easy to duplicate and at the same time can serve as inspiration for creating with your own personal twist! As a quilter and fabric artist I am inspired by Canvas Remix and can't wait to get started on my own canvas creations!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Let loose and create!, October 28, 2008
This review is from: Canvas Remix: Techniques For Creating Mixed-Media Accessories (Paperback)
Grab a piece of raw canvas! Pull out your paints, carve your own stamps and cut some stencils! You don't carve stamps? No problem. Use ready-made stamps and stencils; or just paint! The first section of this book gives specific techniques for the surface decoration of your canvas, with step-by-step photos. The remainder of the book is dedicated to over 20 projects, including jewelry, various pouches and bags, stuffed dolls, a canvas book, picture frame, and more. What you can make with painted canvas is only limited by your imagination!

If, like me, you're looking for some fun and funky accessories for yourself or for gifts that you can do in a reasonable amount of time, this book belongs in your library. NOT just for beginners...artists with all levels of experience will find fresh ideas here.

5.0 out of 5 stars So much fun!!, September 30, 2008
This review is from: Canvas Remix: Techniques For Creating Mixed-Media Accessories (Paperback)
Alisa's book really inspired me. Just starting a canvas of my own was so much fun and all of her different techniques expanded what I thought was even possible! I've always wanted to give a personal touch to something like a clutch and my first finished product has inspired me to try so much more. All my friends have complimented the clutch and want me to make them one.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting idea, but lacking in detail and leaves out an important sewing machine caveat, January 31, 2010
This review is from: Canvas Remix: Techniques For Creating Mixed-Media Accessories (Paperback)
Canvas Remix is a conceptually interesting book, and at first I really liked the ideas presented. I like the author's style. However, when I took a look in greater depth, I felt that the projects are mostly beginner level, but it lacks the detail in the project explanations to be of real use for a beginner audience. The author makes a lot of assumptions that the user already knows how to do things like set snaps, do wire jewelry work, how to sew. She certainly doesn't explain much about how to do these things beyond simply noting that you do them. The photos don't really help make it much clearer either. What made me ultimately decide not to purchase this book was that unless you have a fairly heavy-duty sewing machine, you may not be able to do half the projects. She never mentions that not all sewing machines are heavy-duty enough to sew through canvas without a strong likelihood of damaging the machine. I was very firmly told at the sewing store that my machine (an entry level Singer) would break quickly doing these as it wasn't built to sew through canvas. Do you really want to take the risk? I decided not to, and so rather sadly (because it's still a cool concept, no matter the execution) I decided against the book.
