Canvas of War is the story of World War Two as seen through the eyes of Canadian war artists. It is the moving account of artists such as Alex Colville, Lawren Harris, Charles Comfort and others as they painted the face of war. This one hour documentary includes rare interviews with Canadas few living war artists. Their personal recollections, along with their diaries and letters create the programs powerful narrative. And all of their stories are set against the stunning visual backdrop of their war art. Historians Maria Tippett and Hugh Halliday provide the political and social context for the war artists work, and WWII film footage sets the scene. The National War Museum has granted the production full access to the more than 5000 paintings in their archives. The Museum is currently mounting a touring exhibit of these paintings entitled Wars Hidden Treasure. Canvas of War is conflict as you have never seen it.... terrifying, whimsical, evocative, and beautiful.
