5.0 out of 5 stars Close your eyes and drift away...
This is a lovely, mellow recording that really makes you think you're in a canyon in the Southwest, enjoying nature in all its grandeur.

3.0 out of 5 stars A pleasant solo acoustic instrumental album
Even though the only instrument on this fine CD is soprano sax, it's much closer to being an ambient album than any other genre. There is little here that approaches "jazz," instead the music is more in line with the tone poem approach of classic "new age" artists like Will Ackerman (guitar) and George Winston (piano). 3.0 out of 5 stars A pleasant solo acoustic instrumental album, June 15, 2001

Except, of course, the instrument is sax. By recording it in the Grand Canyon itself, Winter achieves an almost surreal vibe because of the long sustain (echo) time of near ten seconds. This also adds to the "airiness" of the album, taking it far from any jazz or urban sensibilities.

The only downside to the album is that the songs are short (which means just when some are getting going, they're over). But the upside of this is that, despite this being a solo instrumental recording, it's still quite varied (within the confines of those limitations).

The music itself is gentle, warm, friendly, and would play perfectly as the backdrop to reading during the afternoon or a quiet dinner with friends. It might also be suitable for playing (softly) for children's nap time, as the sax has a very soothing effect the way it's played here.

3.0 out of 5 stars Go to sleep, November 8, 2008

This is about as mellow as a brass instrument gets. Eventually these 21 solo saxophone earth odes blend together into a haze of sleeping beauty, making it the ideal disc to accompany the naturist whilst drifting away.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Winter of our Content, December 4, 2007

This review is from: Canyon Lullaby (MP3 Download)
Canyon Lullaby Having been to the Grand Canyon on numerous occasions, and having spent a weekend with the Paul Winter Consort, I can heartily recommend this album, now available only in MP3 download, or in the rare CD bin some place. Winter goes to great lengths to create his authentic and unique music, a music of place and timelessness. One can immerse oneself in this music, be in another place, and commune with nature and place. Each year NPR hosts the Winter Consort and guests at St John the Divine in New York City for the Winter Solstice concert. Music played in that sacred space is similiar in acoustics to Grand Canyon. Winter has made the often cantankerous soprano sax an instrument of incredible beauty and personal expression. Revel in this music and be thankful this man and his band never gave into chart busting and profit making. Music making on the higest level is what Winter has always been about. He has enriched my life manyfold.

I thought this CD was great. The samples found here at Amazon were a good cross section of the content. If you are looking for a CD with peaceful balance, you may want to give this one a try!

1.0 out of 5 stars Canyon Annoying, May 25, 2011
This review is from: Canyon Lullaby (Audio CD)
This CD is arguably the most annoying music I have ever heard. Winter is trying to sound different, but ends up only sounding BAD. A better name for this CD would be "Songs of the American Elk in Estrus", because this is what many of the cuts sound like. Beware: Listen to all of the music before you buy, and save your money.
