Biography

R. Carlos Nakai

Of Navajo-Ute heritage, R. Carlos Nakai is the world’s premier performer of the Native American flute. He began his musical studies on the trumpet, but a car accident ruined his embouchure. Years later his musical interests took a turn when he was given a traditional cedar flute as a gift and challenged to maser it. As an artist, he is an adventurer and risk taker, always giving… Read more in Amazon's R. Carlos Nakai Store

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com essential recording

Nakai's free improvisations on this album are based on his impressions of the Anasazi and Sinagua sites, ancient cliff dwellings that were home to communities of Native people thousands of years ago. By using the Roland SDE 3000 Digital Delay system, Nakai is able to play duets with his own echo, in an effort to emulate the echoes of the past that haunt these ruins. On this recording, Nakai's flute sounds even more plaintive than usual, as if the spirits of these forgotten ancestors had entered into the studio to fill his playing with the whispered reverberations of their ancient ways. This is one of Nakai's most deeply felt recordings, one that resonates with a deep, melancholy yearning. --j. poet --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

Product Description

Using digital technology, R. Carlos Nakai creates the sound of the cedar flute echoing in the canyons and valleys of the vast Southwest. His seventeen free flowing compositions soothe the spirit and carry the listener to the far realms of the imagination. 5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely beautiful, January 30, 2002

As a massage therapist, I have a large collection of new age/meditation/classical CDs, and this is at the top of my list. Not only is it good for massage or relaxation, it is a pleasure to listen to for its own sake. It is soothing enough to be background music, but powerful enough to hold you, no matter what the activity. I highly recommend it!

5.0 out of 5 stars The essence of peace is found here, October 27, 1999
R. Carlos has such a peaceful aura about him, his music and his style. This is the most calming CD I have ever heard. He captures the listener, and transports them to a place where peace and harmony live and problems fall away.

I had this CD, but it's been long lost....I was surfing the web the other day and came upon it again as good meditation music, so I ordered it from amazon...

The first time I heard Nakai's music was at the Taos Pueblo and it has lost none of its ability to reach right down into the middle of me and speak to something very quiet and very still. I work in a very carbolic atmosphere with no privacy or peace....so, I put this CD on, slap on my headphones and I am transported.

Enjoy!
