Land where land ends,
By antonio bianchetti (catania, italy Italy) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Canzoni a Manovella (Audio CD)
Music from southern Italy. Music beyond Pillars of Hercules. Music of "land where land ends" ("Terra dove finisce la terra"). Poets sing sometime staying awake, they are a pray to frenetic rages. Splendid dialogues among pianos of war left at Lubecca ("I pianoforti di Lubecca"). Universal lonelinesses, old songs maybe played with handle ("canzoni come quelle di una volta, forse suonate a manovella"). Tom Waits and Paolo Conte generated a dream: Vinicio Capossela. Lyrics remain engraved in my heart and melodies in my mind. Don't miss it!

Not that Vinicio Capossela sounds just like an Italian Tom Waits...and it would be pretty cool if he did...but there's a certain maniacal whimsical dusty carnival tavern vibe that the two share. I can't understand 90% of the lyrics, but the music is very entertaining, very interesting, very...authentic? I hear influences, but this guy is marching to his own beat. It was a recommendation from a friend that I check this out. I'm very glad that I did!
