5.0 out of 5 stars music for the kid in you, March 28, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Capable Egg (Audio CD)
What an amazing disc! did you ever listen to something that made you feel like you were playing, learning, falling in love and getting scolded all at the same time? Lullabt Baxter Trio's Capable Egg does this and more. The Music is a tight quirky performance by Tom Wait's old band (Oranje Symphonette) that grooves easily from carnivalesque to bosa to country at the flick of Ms. Baxter's caprice. Her Lyrics are deep and mysterious (thanks to ?Lutwidge Sedwick? Who seems to write all the songs). Oh and the most amazing thing about this band is Ms. Baxters deep soulful sultry all-knowing voice. This will melt your heart!

4.0 out of 5 stars Magical Musings, March 30, 2000
This review is from: Capable Egg (Audio CD)
If one is going to get swooned by anyone, it certainly should be by this emerging delight.

Her style is fresh and her lyrics have depth.

Lullaby has what many strive for. The ability to fill her amazing voice with sweet tenderness and love, giving the listener more than one needs to fill the body and vibrate the soul.

She knows what she has to offer. One wonders, do you? [vivian dean]

5.0 out of 5 stars And Now For Something Really Original, April 20, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Capable Egg (Audio CD)
Anyone who listens to Capable Egg even for the first time, has got to be struck by the mellifluous voice of Lullaby Baxter, the wonderfully clever arrangements of the Oranj Symphonette who back her up and, the lovely, silly -so imanginative lyrics of Lutwidge Sedgwick. And listen again; every time is a new experience of discovering the unique subtleties of this album, a truly original Coney Island of the mind and...spirit.

4.0 out of 5 stars Quirky and downright odd at times, this is one of the, April 30, 2000

musical highlights of the year so far. With oddball instrumentation and musicianship from the collective known as Oranj Symphonette and funny, evocative lyrics, Lullaby Baxter Trio is something new and distinctive. Occasionally reminiscent of the British band Fairground Attraction, the Waitsian noodling of the band and Ms.Baxter's warm country 'n'jazz singing are a really winning combination. This one will surely gather fans as the year progresses and finish on many 'Best Of' lists. Now, after me, "Mr. Powder-Blue Breadbox you're no turnip wrapped in tinsel." Almost Beefheartian, don't you think?

5.0 out of 5 stars Rejuvenating, makes me smile when I drive!, May 4, 2004
This review is from: Capable Egg (Audio CD)
A friend shared this disc with me about 2 years ago and it's been the gift that keeps on giving. I listened to it over and over again and loved the lightness and levity. I recently found it again and was instantly hooked and charmed once more. I pop in when I'm in the car and I forget about traffic. It made a lonely 3.5 hour drive a dream. The lyrics are kooky and fun, whimsical yet full of truth. There's always something deeper lurking beneath the whimsy. And Lullaby's voice is sultry, smooth, and rich -- like vocal milk chocolate. A rare treat.

This is the gift I'm giving 2 friends who need cheer, I'm certain it will lift their spirits. If lyrics and music like this don't make you crack a smile, you're hopeles -- this disc is that good!

5.0 out of 5 stars Delightful, February 21, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Capable Egg (Audio CD)
The official review here do a wonderful job of capturing this delightful cd. What I'll add, is that everyone I've forced this cd on, has been politely indulgent upon seeing the cover art.... AND, each and every one has come back saying they loved it.

There is just too little music like this out there that is thisenjoyable. "Capable Egg" was lent to me by a friend whoknows my fondness for quirky blends of sophistication and whimsey andthis collection of songs has become an instant favorite. Shades ofMerrie Amsterberg, Madeline Peyroux and Lisa Lauren, each tune amusesand enthralls.

5.0 out of 5 stars just what I needed..., August 25, 2000

Seems a little redundant to rave about this one, but I mainly wanted to assert that Canadians aren't the only ones who know a good thing when they hear one. Long Beach loves it too! I was wondering to what happened to the guys who backed Tom Waits in his heyday, and I'm glad to hear they've kept on the golden path. Now if Baxter can hold on to her amazing voice a bit better than Waits did...

5.0 out of 5 stars Come on Daisy pack your bags...buy this album NOW!, April 14, 2000
This review is from: Capable Egg (Audio CD)
I've got a yen for a hen by the name of Lulliby Baxter.

I have to say that nothing makes me happier than to throw this album on while i'm greeting the day, coffe in hand....funny. They call it lullaby....i say wake up and live it hard music.

The lyrics are inspiring...and Lullaby's voice is so wonderful...inducing chills. i love this album so much that i've now listened to it so many times i mumble the lyrics in my sleep.

I once met someone who said there really is a powder blue bread box....what i want to know is if there is powder blue bread?

5.0 out of 5 stars a keeper, May 3, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Capable Egg (Audio CD)
whimsical more than non-sensical (as traces of narrative peep through) but not insipid. evokes the seriousness of a child at play. alluring alliteration, a celebration of phantastic words. sound very balanced--very rich voice, rich words, implications of many music genres, but the overall effect one would have to describe as "minimalist". infinitely listenable. very cool.
