After nearly three months of conuducting research on the washer I wanted to buy, I finally settled on this one. I have had it now for over one month, and have done well over 40 loads so far. I washed all of our bedding, pillows, and rugs, and we average at least one load per day. *Before anyone freaks out over that three month timeframe, please realize that I don't mean three months of 8 hour days studing washers. I've got a full life, with working full-time, going to college full-time, and raising three kids. All told, I probably put about 30 hours of research into this purchase.*
That being said, I chose this washer for several reasons.
1) I did not want a front loader. I just don't like them. I don't want to have to bend over to load and unload. I did research front-loaders as part of my study, but I just didn't want one. Besides the bending, many owners of front loader complained about a musty smell. I also learned that some front loaders need to be drained. No thanks! That's too much work for me.
2) Maytag offers a 10 year warranty- the absolute best warranty available from any manufacturer, including Electrolux. I figure that if the company offers such a good warranty, that means they believe they've made a good product.
3) I wanted a large machine. I have a family of five, and a king-size bed.
4) I was concerned about the tendency of HE top-loaders to destroy clothes. This particular machine had fewer customer complaints about this problem than any other.
5) It is Energy Star rated.

Now, the tests:
1) Does it get clothes clean? I am happy to assure you that this machine does a fabulous job of cleaning clothes. My kids drive me crazy by walking outside in their white socks, getting the bottoms filthy.

I absolutely hate this washer. I've owned it for 18 months now and every time I use it I regret the purchase. Here are some of the reasons I hate it.

1. It uses waaaaay too little water. When I bought it the salesman told me that the machine fills to the top of the clothes plus 1 gallon. That is simply not true. The clothes stick out above the top of the water by 9 inches. The water level is slightly adjustable by the soil level setting but this only changes the level by an inch or two. I have experimented for hours to try to increase the water level - the machine is determined to keep the level low probably so that they can get their highest-level energy star rating. Now you may think that it is a good thing for it to use too little water but when you see how harsh it is on your clothes (item 2 below) and how wrinkled the clothes get (item 4 below) you will change your mind.

2. It is extremely harsh on clothes. When I bought it the salesman told me that the machine is more gentle than older style agitator machines. That is completely untrue. This washer pills clothes visibly with every single wash. Brand new towels appear old and worn after a few washes. Here is why it is so harsh. The clothes throughout the load are wet but they are not submerged in water. Only the bottom of the load is submerged in water. The washer tries to pull the clothes up and down into and out of the water at the bottom. It does so by twisting and spinning them, similar to the way clothes are twisted when you wring them out. This is harmful for clothes. When clothes are submerged in water (as in older washers) the water acts as a cushion against rubbing. The water is moved by the agitator and the clothes glide around in it. The higher the water-to-clothes ratio the more gentle it is on the clothes.

Our previous washer was a Maytag that lasted a long time. It was a top load that did a nice job and we were always happy with it until it finally gave out. So when it was time for a new one, we went with Maytag again.

This new Maytag HE is fantastic, we love everything about it. It is quieter, uses less detergent and water, has a lot more options, and gets clothes cleaner than our old washer. I was skeptical about the HE detergent at first, but after using it for a couple of months, I would never consider going back to the old stuff again! Since we use less detergent per load, the bottles last longer, even though the HE detergent comes in smaller bottles. I like the clear see-thru cover on this machine - you can see if there is anything in it when you walk by (since wife and I both do laundry). It gets clothes cleaner, too. Our 4-year old has Spongebob yellow wristbands that he wears everywhere, and they were dingy after a few months with the old washer. One wash in this one, and they were brighter yellow again.

This machine has a lot of nice options. You can set it to "Sheets" for a load of just sheets. We use "Power Wash" for the nasty loads (vomit, etc.). The machine has presets for each option, but you can also always change water temp, add an extra rinse, etc. if you want to. The machine gives you a "clean cycle" indicator light after every 30 loads, when you are suggested to use a cleaning tablet. We do this and have not had any of the odor problems it is intended to avoid. Although the cleaning tablets are an extra expense we didn't have before, they are more than offset by the savings in detergent (plus probably water and electricity, though I don't track that to prove it).
