A young Tunesmith with the chops to make it BIG!,
By
This review is from: Capades (Audio CD)
I attended a Bird & the Bee concert in Connecticut last week, and their opening act was Alex Lilly, AKA Obi Best. Like most of the crowd there, I had never heard of her up to that point.... But they sure know who she is now, and you will too! She, along with a guitarist (Wendy Wang) played almost the entire Cd live. She is a keyboard virtuoso and her lyrics are sweet, funny at times, and always interesting. If you enjoy good tunes with great instrumental hooks, give Obi Best a listen. You won't be sorry.

A fresh breath of airy music! Every single song on this is catchy and sets a magical landscape. Fav tracks are Nothing can come between us, It's because of people like you, green and white stripes and days of decadence! These songs take me back to that magical time when you are a little kid playing in different worlds. In many ways similar to bird and the bee and stereolabish, this music is definitely substantial and belongs in the ears of music tastemakers.

Blooms like flowers, it really does,

Mesmerizing, beautiful, progressive pop. Anyone that likes St. Vincent, or the more artistic side of Bird & the Bee would love this album, unbelievable songwriting craft, lyrics and music, brains and beauty. The lyrics alone are worth the price of the album, and the music is light years ahead of what passes as pop music today. Check out "Because of People Like You", "Nothing Can Come Between Us", "Blooms like Flowers", every song is a rare gift to the world. This is an album you will be returning to a lot.

Obi - THE BEST,

I too saw Obi Best open for The Bird and The Bee (in Philadelphia). I had not heard of her but was blown away. So innocent and refreshing. To see her in person is a real delight as she perfectly reproduces the music on her CD. I wish her all THE BEST! Love you Alex!

Obi (is the) Best,

I had the pleasure of seeing Obi Best (Alex Lilly) open for The Bird & The Bee last night. Apparently, they are making the most of their touring dollars, as Alex sings backing vocals for Inara & Greg. It is always such a pleasant surprise for me when a previously unknown opening act offers a show that rivals the headlining act. This was exactly the case. I have had this little hidden gem in my CD player since acquiring it last night and I already love it and know I will enjoy it for a long time to come. The tracks that stood out during the performance have fast become my favorites: Swedish Boy, It's Because of People Like You, Days of Decadence and Nothing Can Come Between Us. These songs possess a playful, naïve undertone, most with an electronic Asian-inspired sound. Lilly comes across as a sweet & lovely ingénue, but clearly she is a talented, experienced musician. I'm obviously happy to have discovered Obi Best! Also kudos to Wendy Wang, who supported both bands and also has an amazing voice.

Ear Candy,

Drifting through your consciousness, Alex Lilly's airy vocals combined with poppy lighthearted melodies will take you on a ride through delightfully uncharted territory. It's witty and young and chock full of catchy tunes. "Swedish Boy" is a standout - a track that reminds me of paper cranes and color wheels. If you like The Bird and The Bee and/or Au Revoir Simone and/or indie pop in general, you'll be down with Obi Best.

how can an album be this airy but still stick with you?,

the worst review i've seen floating around for this album suggested that the songs were "slight" or "thin" or something like that. i think that's potentially a valid criticism, or at least seems so the first time you listen. yet, somehow, these slight--or perhaps airy is more precise--songs stuck with me. the arrangements are subtle, but full of detail. the lyrics are clever and thoughtful. the songs on the whole differentiate themselves, albeit slowly. worth a try for anyone who likes the bird and the bee, as already suggested. sample "it's because of people like you" and if you like that, you'll probably at least grow to love the rest.

Please do another Seattle show,

I first heard Obi Best at a February `09 Seattle show where they opened for The Bird and the Bee and I haven't stopped listening to them since!
Alex Lilly is a very gifted vocalist and songwriter whose songs are wonderfully bizarre and beautifully crafted worked combining lush beats, permeating rhythms and memorably catchy lyrics; one can tell that a lot of work went into this debut. Lilly has a very sweet sounding voice and amazing range that you just don't hear every day; my only wish is that the CD was longer! ~armikka

pleasant and airy,

i'm highly enjoying this album - it's great to just put into the cd player and have in the background while working, but also nice to sit back and relax to.
it's sophisticated music, but accessible to all types of listeners (i'm a big acoustic indie singer/songwriter fan but obi best's music enchanted and captivated me.) the songs are playful but also sarcastic; passionate, honest and varied. "within these forest walls" is like going back to your secret imaginative play world. "swedish boy" is another favorite - an adult fairy tale version of penpal lovers. and "what it's not" is a great ode to breaking up, the longings, and trying to move on. |
