One of the best 2D fighting games ever finally comes to the Playstation 2. Capcom vs. SNK 2 is the sequel to another great fighting game, with more characters, grooves and much more. All the characters from the first game are back plus the addition Rock Howard, Joe Higashi, Haohmaru, Kyosuke, Dan, Eagle, Maki etc. and the evil versions of certain characters ( Evil Ryu, Blood Iori, Shin Akuma and Ultimate Rugal). The graphics are excellent and control is top notch. The backgrounds are 3D and very nice and a few characters make cameo appearances ( The London Stage has Billy Kane from Fatal Fury and Dudley from Street Fighter 3). There are also pre-fight intros with certain characters just before each fight ( Joe vs. Mai, Kim vs. Chang, Hibiki vs. Rolento pus many more). Any who is a fan of the Street Fighter and King Of Fighters series will absolutely love this game. Hopefully when they make Capcom vs. SNK 3 they'll add whole bunch of new characters like Batsu, Roy and Daigo from Rival Schools, Genjuro, Sieger and Basara from Samurai Shodown, Haggar from Final Fight, Andy B., Wolfgang K. from Fatal Fury and a whole lot more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another fine fighter from the masterminds at Capcom, September 23, 2001
This review is from: Capcom vs SNK 2 (Video Game)
As some of you might know Capcom's previous installment in this series left more to be desired. There could of been more characters, better balance in the ratios between them, updated graphics(some sprites were ripped straight out of games a few years old). Well, I'm happy to say that Capcom has learned from this and made and excellent game in the sequal, Capcom Vs. SNK 2.

The first thing you will notice when you boot this game up is the vast amount of characters. 46 brutal brawlers from the start + 2 hidden characters you must unlock. Characters sorely missed from the first installment have been popped into this game. Haohmaru from Samurai Shodown, Hibiki from Last Blade 2 and many others. A huge list split evenly between Capcom and SNK. Can't go wrong.

The Graphics have had a nice overhaul. Sprites are more detailed and contain more animation(Very thankful for this, as some of the SNK characters seemed choppy compared to Capcoms fighters). The graphics are completely in 3D now(ala Marvel Vs. Capcom 2) and are absolutely brilliant.

All these improvements are nice and all, but what about Gameplay? Rest assured, the gameplay has been vastly improved as well. The old ratio system has been dropped in favor of giving whichever character you like their own ratio. There are 3 forms in the Arcade mode, Ratio(self explanitory), 3 on 3(SNK) and 1 on 1(Capcom). There are now a total of 6 grooves to choose from, each changing the way you will have to play the game quite a bit. 3 from Capcom and 3 from SNK. This alone keeps the game challenging and gives it some more replay value.

Overall Capcom Vs. SNK 2 is a terrific fighter which should be warmly welcomed into any fighter fan's gaming library. Even if you're not really into fighting games this is one you should still check out - give it a rent. It was a sad day when SNK closed it's doors to all it's wonderful fighting franchises, but we can thank Capcom for letting us play as these characters once again in an awesome and memorable fighter. Purchase ASAP.

5.0 out of 5 stars At last a 2D fighter for PS2, October 14, 2001

This review is from: Capcom vs SNK 2 (Video Game)
I've been waiting for this game for quite a while and it's almost finally here. Capcom Vs SNK 2 lets you play as some of the most famous fighters from both of these companies' fighting games (mostly Street Fighter and King of Fighters). I've been doing quite a bit of research on this game and let me tell you IT LOOKS GREAT, the only problem I found was that some of the characters, especially Morrigan, look really outdated. There really is little consistency between the look of the several fighters. The backgrounds on the other hand look spectacular.

Gameplay-wise, the game is a big improvement over the original Capcom vs SNK. The new ratio system lets you assign ratios to the different fighter instead of having fixed values for each character. This lets you make teams with any characters you want. Also there are now 6 different grooves instead of just 2. I won't get into the details of the different grooves but having 6 unique ways of playing a character adds greatly to the replay value.

The number of characters in this game is also amazing, there are 44 characters (22 from each side) and 4 hidden ones (or so I've heard; Evil Ryu, Blood Riot Iori, Shin Akuma and God Rugal). Since I'm not really a King of Fighters fan this game gives me 20-something new fighters to play with. People who are familiar with both of these companies fighting games might not find as much novelty in the game as I will but there are still some interesting new characters. From Capcom you get Eagle, Kyosuke, Maki, Yun and Dan. From SNK Haohmaru, Hibiki, Athena, Joe, Chang and Choi, Todo and Rock Howard.

I would definitely recommend this game to any fighting game fan. Even if you have already played the original Capcom Vs SNK to death, I think you will find some new stuff in this game to keep you hooked for another couple of months. This game will definitely keep me busy until Tekken 4 and Virtua Fighter 4 hit the PS2.

This review is from: Capcom vs SNK 2 (Video Game)
Capcom Vs. SNK 2 is the sequel to the popular cross-over Capcom Vs. SNK. Improved features include: more characters, 3D backrounds, restored controls (the traditional 3 punch, 3 kick button controls are back thankfully), and 6 different "grooves". The most significant changes in my opinion are the addition of the new characters and the good old 6 button control layout. I believe the 4 button scheme implemented in Capcom Vs. SNK 1 and Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 seriously compromised the gameplay. So with the larger character roster and tweaked gameplay, what's not to like, right? Unfortunately, there are a couple of drawbacks. For some reason, Capcom has felt the need to leave the characters in their recent 2D fighting games in low resolution. I really don't see why they decided to do that, because even the animation intense Street Fighter 3 was done in high res. Also, some characters have been stretched and re-sized when they didn't need to be, and the fireballs are done with 3D graphics that do not match the 2D hand drawn characters. Even though the graphics and overall presentation are only satisfactory, I still recommend Capcom Vs. SNK 2. There should be enough 2D fighting action to keep any fan of the genre interested for at least a while.

4.0 out of 5 stars The sequel to the best 2D fighter is on PlayStation 2 !, December 14, 2001
This review is from: Capcom vs SNK 2 (Video Game)
Originally entitled, Capcom VS SNK 2: Millionaire Fighting 2001 in Japan. Capcom VS SNK for the Dreamcast, was no doubt, the best among the VS series and gamers agree that this was the best 2D fighting game that should not be passed up. It has pleased both Capcom fans and SNK fans altogther but some SNK fans complained about how they changed the characters, but most SNK fans really liked how Capcom enhanced their favorite SNK heroes with beatifully rendered anime style animation. Now two years have passed and the freshly made sequel, Capcom VS SNK 2: Mark of the Millenium was announced and it was said to be better than the prequel of the game...only this time, it was going to release for the PlayStation 2 as one of the first 2D fighters for the console, along with Sammy Entertainment's Guilty Gear X, in the U.S. since the Dreamcast is going out of business. But I didn't complain, since there was still some hope for me. I found that the DC version was available in Japan and I ordered it off of a store where they sell Japanese import games for all kinds of platforms. Currently, I own the game as a Japanese import for the Dreamcast, and it played very well. I also played the PS2 version as well at a nearby videogame store. I've expected the PS2 to surpass the 2D animation of the Dreamcast's superior 2D fighters, but unfortunately it didn't. Like Marvel VS Capcom 2 for the DC, the graphics are amazing and the backgrounds are fully detailed in gorgeous 3D technology. But nothing compared to Marvel VS Capcom 2 or the imported DC version of Capcom VS SNK 2. The 2D animation was way too pixelated. If you're not familiar with what I'm saying, let me sum it up for you. The characters look kinda bumpy. I have known the PS2 for its gracefully enhanced technology in gaming, but this...I was very disappointed with what I saw. It seems like the PS2 is not good at making good looking 2D fighters. That's why I've taken one star down. It would've made 5 stars if it hadn't been for the horrible 2D animated characters. The gameplay still remained solid and it plays the same as its prequel, which is a good thing. The contols remain simple and sometimes hard to master. Once again, the gameplay still combines the best of Capcom and SNK's spectacular playability. Some 2D haters may call it another joke, but this is still, one the best ideas in Capcom 2D fighting in years. The Sound is fantastic and it sounds way better than the first. Unlike Marvel VS Capcom 2, which suffered from horrible, unfit Jazz music, the tracks are very cool to listen to all day. The genres include hip hop, guitar, and orchestral music (the rap theme on the New York stage sounds cool and the appearance of Akuma and Rugal sounds like you're watching a movie). And the voice acting is great. Although there are some changes, there are no problems whatsoever. The cast of characters are an amazing surprise to the fans of SNK and Capcom. Your tears will shed as you see new warriors step into the ring like Rock Howard, the son of Geese Howard (You will see him in Fatal Fury: Mark of the Wolves on Dreamcast), Hyo Imawano's younger brother, Kyosuke Kagami from Rival Schools and Project Justice, Kasumi's father, Mr. Todo from Art of Fighting fame, The Joke Street Fighter Dan Hibiki, The strongest kickboxer from Thailand, Joe Higashi from the Fatal Fury series, Athena Asamiya from the KOF series, Yun and Yang from Street Fighter III (Yang is a secret character), Hibiki Takane from Last Blade 2, and more ! You will be thoroghly amazed when you see the new bosses of the game like Shin Akuma and God Rugal. Plus some unique features to unlock. Rather than just buying characters, colors, stages, and features by using a short amount of VS points, you can just earn them by simply playng through the game. And plus, its much more easier to earn groove points during battle, depending on which character your using. All in all, Capcom VS SNK 2 for the PS2 is a great 2D fighter, but it could've been more exciting if the 2D animation weren't so bumpy and pixelated. Still, this is even better than the original and belive me. Once you own this game, you'll feel very proud of owning it ! Still, if you want to experience the perfect Capcom VS SNK 2, do what I do and order the Japanese version for the Dreamcast. This version is the same as the PS2 version, only with better character animation. But still, both versions are very impressive. If you loved Capcom VS SNK for the Dreamcast, there is no reason why you should ignore Capcom VS SNK 2: Mark of the Millenium 2001 for the PS2. Respect it by buying it !

5.0 out of 5 stars Capcom is back on the rise!, August 24, 2002
This review is from: Capcom vs SNK 2 (Video Game)
This is a great fighting game, one out of the five-peat Capcom scored this past few years (Project Justice, aka Rival Schools 2, was great, although hard-to-find in US arcades and only on Dreamcast. Street Fighter Alpha 3 was what the first two should have been. Ditto for Street Fighter 3: Third Strike. And, of course, that OTHER versus game, which we will get into later). First, be aware that Capcom vs. SNK is really Street Fighter versus Fatal Fury with a few extra characters tossed in for good measure. This is one of the minor problems I have with this game. The character depth isn't what it should be. I don't really know much about SNK outside of the fighting games so I won't comment, but Capcom could have dumped some of the Shotokans and the obligatory "fat and useless" characters like Zangief for, above all things, more characters from Rival Schools. Kyosuke is represented in 2-D glory here, and Batsu and Hinata make guest appearances, but I want more. Any Capcom fan has a special place in his/her heart for Rival Schools. On top of that, I disagree with most people that Mega Man should be in this game because he makes more sense in Marvel vs. Capcom 2 (ditto Morrigan, who is in both games but only should belong in the other one). I think the real problem is that only one versus series should have ever happened. They're both good, but the characters selections have to be limited because while Capcom can jack up storylines all they want, they do care about continuity. Which brings me to another problem. Ryu and Ken are their Alpha selves in Marvel vs. Capcom, yet are SF3 here. So, when they were more inexperienced fighters they could throw massive fireball beams but they can't now? And, in this game, some people look like they're from SF3, some from Alpha, it's really more confusing than usual, even for Capcom. Graphics are another problem. The backgrounds are amazing, rich, expansive, and detailed. The characters, however, are pixelated. I mean, the first time you see this game, particularly after you've played Marvel vs. Capcom all day, it really hits you. The characters look a little rough. Couldn't Capcom have smoothed them out a little? This game takes less animation to run than Marvel vs. Capcom anyway. And, my finally problem: all those needless grooves. There are six to choose from, but really 99% of all Capcom fans are gonna choose "C" and most SNK fans are gonna choose "S." Those problems aside, this is a great game. The character change system in this game, where you pick their order before every fight and change characters only when one dies, is great for people who are too confused by the craziness of Marvel vs. Capcom 2. The characters are more balanced too (cough, Cable, cough). Overall, I think that Marvel vs. Capcom 2 is a little funner and easy to learn. But this game has way more depth even with fewer characters, and it's always fun to dispatch button-mashers with Guile without even breaking a sweat:)

4.0 out of 5 stars Truly overrated for its greatness., November 18, 2001

I cannot believe all the negative reviews this game has received. First of all, if you are a fan of the Capcom fighting games, and if you are also a fan of the SNK fighters--both worlds collide and you get the best of them. This game is a major upgrade from its predecessor which was also a great game. Give credit where credit is due, if you like fighting games, let alone Capcom or SNK fighters, you are in fighting game wonderland with this title. You get a wide variety of fighters from the Capcom and SNK universe--you can choose from up to six grooves and 2 customizable grooves after you beat the game under certain criteria. Great sound, great gameplay, great game. It is especially fun when played against your friends--this is the title I play the most against other players. Even if you are not a fighting game fan, this game will turn you around.

With a populated roster of characters, diverse fighting system comprised from the various titles of the two game companies, and a strong overall gameplay, no fighting game fan can claim themselves as one without Capcom VS SNK 2, which ranks as one of the best in the genre hands-down.

There are a few small downsides that can be very sutble; the game can be very technical so unless the difficulty level is cranked down to personal tastes, casual gamers may find it rough in the beginning. The replay value for 1-Player is almost slim to none, but in all honesty who plays a good fighting game by themselves? And if you're really nit-picky about graphics, then for a 2D fighter expect nothing revolutionary (most complaints are pixel-related, particularly with Dalkstalker's Morgan).

That aside, THIS IS A MUST-HAVE, especially for those who enjoyed the chaotic blockbuster, "Marvel VS Capcom 2".

Pros:

- Great old school 2D fighting graphics
- Excellent cast of characters
- Tons of characters to choose from
- Fast paced
- 3 on 3 battles
- Ratio system is nice
- Many fighting styles available
- A couple characters to unlock

Cons:

- I wish you could switch out your character during a round like in the Versus games.
- The sprites are a bit more pixelated than they should be

I bought this game because it included many of my favorite fighting characters from when I was growing up.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the Greatest Fighters of All Time, May 31, 2007
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Capcom vs SNK 2 (Video Game)
I've played fighting games all my life. I'm a Huge fighting game enthusiast. I've mastered all sorts of fighting games from mortal kombat, street fighter series, king of fighters, darkstalkers, killer instincts (rememebr that),tekken, DOA, soul calibur, virtua fighter, mvc2, guilty gearx2, etc................ So now that you know that, you can take my word when I say that THIS GAME IS AWESOME AND YOU GET EVERY BUCK YOU PAY FOR. This game is literally 2d fighting mastered. You get 3on3, ratio, or single matchups. Unlike Marvel vs capcom 2 where you get 56 characters and maybe use a dime out of the dozen, in cvs2 every character can be lethal if you know how to use them. There are also 6 different groove styles and they really do change the way you play your character. Plenty of unlockables- characters and boss mode. Customize your groove and character color. The game has crazy replay value due to it's very wide arrange of variations and modes!! Don't listen to the people complaining about the sprite animation or the backgrounds in this game. The gameplay in this game far outweighs the lack of graphical prowess this game has compared to other games out in the market. Not only that, I've found the MUSIC in this game to be excellent...from the intro to the character selection to the fighting...it really pumps you up and has a cool feel to it. I'm surprised no one has mentioned this yet.

RECOMMENDATIONS:
Look, stop wasting time and BUY THIS GAME especially if you are a fighting game enthusiast!! My current top 3 fighting games on the PS2 are Capcom vs SNK 2, Marvel VS Capcom 2, and Guilty Gear X2. I've had CVS2 and MVC2 for over 5 years and GGx2 for over a year and still play them every so often and at times religiously. I've picked up 3D fighters like Tekken or DOA or Soul Calibur but they seem to bore me quickly and have little replay value.

2D fighters are the best way to go for fighters. Just gotta do it right and Capcom vs SNK 2 is one really great example of how it's done right!
