4.0 out of 5 stars everything you could hope for, February 4, 2007

This review is from: With a Cape & A Cane (Audio CD)
This album is definitely in the same vein as their last album; which is great! They still manage to be catchy as heck plus thoughtful, dancy, showy, and without a hint of a clear pretense behind it; they seem to make what comes natural to them, and it lands in a genre, but with such original style, technique and difference that it's fantastic. They are surely a cut above, way above, other music and bands in this genre.

Besides their obvious skills, the lyrics are good and the songs on it are all memorable and different enough one to the next so as not to irritate the mind. My favorite track at the moment is "white madam" - great song pretty/catchy/haunting chorus with good riffs throughout.

Not much to complain about. I am fairly confident that any open minded music fan who listens to this a couple times should like it. I am even more confident that any close minded dork who only likes the killers, interpol, figurines, maximo park, and the mountain of other indie dance rock, will love this album. But, just so no one gets confused, these guys are far removed from "retro dance" in every way; they are just dancy, technical ROCK!

A band has to really push themselves to be "new" or "fresh", but thankfully the Joggers are, at this point, just that. Kudos to them!

With a Cape and a Cane does not disappoint. Thank you for creating this gem of an album fellas.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ben Whitesides and the Joggers are fantastic, January 7, 2006
This review is from: With a Cape & A Cane (Audio CD)
I had the pleasure of hearing the Joggers in DC a couple years ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. The Joggers's tunes are distinctive, sincere and at times, intoxicating. I look forward to hearing where their third album takes me and possibly them.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my greatest finds, January 6, 2010

There's a good positive energetic vibe behind this music. I feel like I can really tell these guys have the right attitude... a lot of intelligence without pretension, typical of Portland where this band formed. Also, these guys really know their music. I don't really know how to explain my infatuation with this group (especially this album); I'm not a music critic, but The Joggers cover these bases that i find important in any music:

1) They are very talented musicians, the recordings don't require a lot of over-dubbing or remixing or electronica to get the sounds they want

2) As a group they're very dynamic: they can create excitement from a repeated chorus that builds and builds, or they can tear an awesome guitar riff or a tasty bass line and build from that, or they can just shout acapella harmonies... their unique vocal harmony combinations create a signature sound that's all their own, and that's hard to come by. They have a lot of options because of how talented they are, and they utilize a variety of strengths in these songs.

3) The lyrics aren't mind-blowingly complex, but they are clever, thoughtful, and at the very least not stupid. Nothing ruins a great album more than finding out the lyrics are stupid as hell. That is not the case with this album.

Although they definitely have a style and feel that is completely their own, some of their classic rock roots show, plus a little punk-influence. The compositions on this album are very well-done, and you won't even notice it at first. This album could feed the Strokes/Interpol/mainstream crowd, but it can also feed people like me who appreciate the complexities and art of music. I highly recommend this album, very entertaining overall. I really hope there will be a third album!
