About the Author
Benito Prez Galds, born in 1843 in the Canary Islands, went to Madrid to study law at age nineteen. His class attendance was poor but he absorbed the life of Madrid through the cafs and theaters. Between 1867 and 1915 he wrote more than seventy novels. His works put him in a class with Cervantes.
Robert G. Trimble, the translator, is a retired professor of Spanish and Portuguese from Hanover College in Hanover, Indiana.
