Editorial Reviews

Presenting the original soundtrack to the NBC Universal superhero television series THE CAPE, starring David Lyons, Keith David and Summer Glau. Acclaimed composer Bear McCreary (BATTLESTAR GALACTICA, HUMAN TARGET, THE WALKING DEAD, TERMINATOR: THE SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES) creates a robust, thrilling orchestral score in the grand tradition of the late, great Shirley Walker's superhero music (McCreary has sited Walker as a major influence on this score and has dedicated this album to her). Produced by Bear McCreary and mastered by Patricia Sullivan at Bernie Grundman Mastering, this 2-CD release, packed with exciting themes, also features a 16 page CD booklet with comments from McCreary and the show's creator, Tom Wheeler. This is a limited edition of 2000 units.

The Cape was a show that just didn't find its audience. It definitely didn't belong on network television that's for sure. So in a flash the series came, it got moved around the schedule and finally cancelled. The fact that the hero's name was The Cape didn't help much to sell the show. In fact that hero name belongs with The Coon and other South Park hero names. However, one of the biggest aspects of the show was not the silly costumes or cheesy acting. It was Bear McCreary's amazing score. Now La-La Land Records has released a phenomenal 2-disc set. Today every superhero is held under a microscope and examined next to The Dark Knight. It's just the way it is. Christopher Nolan and Hans Zimmer pushed the genre away from large themes and theatrics, and that is a very good thing in my opinion. But it is true that sometimes I long for that old-fashioned feel, and here McCreary delivers that.

Now, this set is packed with around 2 hours and 40 minutes of music. Bear and La-La Land always make sure we get the complete experience as evident in his past releases. This score is fantastic storytelling. There is a mountain of different textures and layers that keep building and shifting. McCreary handles the execution with such mastery that you will feel like this is a score composed some 20-years ago (or a composer 20-years older). It has that classic romanticism imbedded in it, but with Bear's style can be incredibly aggressive and thematic when it needs to be. You will find all sorts of instrumental flavors here from celtic feels to electric guitars. The music is always swelling as large as the orchestra will play, and that's something that truly sets the score apart. The music fills the room. You just don't hear this kind of orchestra in a TV series, ever.

The show sucked. Lame writing. Uncharismatic, miscast actors. Weak action scenes. It really didn't deserve this soundtrack. In context, this music played against some really bad television. However, the upside is that when you listen to the album, you can forget about that.

It's a catchy title theme; but then, most shows (and every Bear McCreary show) have/has a catchy title theme. This one has a two-disc set full of dynamic superhero music. Most of it is typically orchestral, but some unusual instruments get featured; even a tuba solo. Even the action cues are fairly melodic and enjoyable, and several distinct character themes emerge. The circus music, an obnoxious element in the show, oddly enough plays very well as an occasional bit of color here. It's amazing that a show that was canceled this quickly managed to produce two discs worth of music, but it isn't particularly repetitive or full of filler.

It's a limited edition, but if you can get it at a decent price, it's almost as good as Human Target (Season 1) (Soundtrack) (Expanded 3 Disc Set).

Love his Battlestar Galactica soundtracks, and this one fits this series too. The range of exotic instruments in his scores sets it apart!
