Book Description

December 21, 1993 081919185X 978-0819191854
This book examines the contribution of Cape Cod to the transformation of the Pilgrims' Plymouth into a mature colony. The author covers the exploration of the region as well as the early travels to the Cape before its settlement, explaining the eventual significance of individual towns like Sandwich, which became the colony's center of Quakerism. Politically, Cape towns forced the colony to adopt a representative legislature and economically, the Cape provided acreage for farming and sites for additional towns. King also examines why, despite the expansion and the growth, Plymouth still remained a poor and underpopulated colony.
This book stands alone as the only study of the entire Cape to be published in this century.

Editorial Reviews

Review

The author has woven together the many strands of interaction between the Cape towns and the Colony on several different levels. In so doing he has not only referenced a huge number of the official records, but has also read every previously publishedwork from the earliest to the most recent. The copious notes at the end of each chapter are themselves worthwhile reading for their rich content...this excellent little book is not only scholarly, but it is also a pleasure to read.>>> (New England Historical And Genealogical Register )

This book assembles a broad variety of materials and revisits a somewhat neglected area of New England....Academic readers and local historians will doubtless find the bibliographic essay a helpful guide to primary and little-known materials, and King's careful readings of the official colony records ...summarize cases in a useful way.>>> (William And Mary Quarterly )

This review is from: Cape Cod and Plymouth Colony in the Seventeenth Century (Hardcover)
This book details the history of the settlements on the Cape Cod peninsula in the first eight decades of the English period. It covers the establishment of the towns, the social structure, the political and religious controversies, the economics, and a whole lot more. It's a scholarly work, extensively documented; but unlike a lot of academic historians, this author can write. It is, therefore, highly recommended for anyone with an interest in Cape Cod history. If your interest in Cape Cod is genealogical, there's a wealth of detail about many of the early settlers that I've seen nowhere else.
